Talked to my daughter up in Gustavus, Alaska, she had not heard anything about the attacks in Paris. They have no TV and very limited Internet access, they usually have to go into town to a cafe to log in or to get a good cell phone connection.  The place they live is very remote, the ferry only come's twice a week  or you can take small plane to and from Juneau. One little grocery store but it's expensive so they usually take the ferry to Juneau every 3 months and hit Costco and Safeway. And the liquor store in the winter is only open 3 times a week from 4 to 6pm. Big traffic jam to get in there sometimes. Personally, it's a bit to remote for me. 4951

That is very remote. Hope each family member has at least a little first aid training. 4951

@Chrisinkingwood:

Are they homesteaders or do they work for a company there. Sometimes I think that is the way to go. 4951

There is a story about some kids from Alaska who won some science competition and went to some convention I think in NY in the 80's. The town they were from was rated the most remote in the US. Try and and find the story....they were mesmerized by basic stuff when they got to a real city to say the least.  Here it is book "Kids from Nowhere":In 1982, George Guthridge brought his wife and two young daughters
to Gambell, Alaska, a small village on the edge of the remote
blizzard-swept St. Lawrence Island in the Bering Sea, one of the
harshest and most remote places in Alaska. Guthridge was there to teach
at a Siberian-Yupik school -- a school so troubled it was under threat
of closure.   For its own reasons, the school
district enters the students into one of the most difficult academic
competitions in the nation. The school has no computers and very few
books. The students lack world knowledge and speak English as a second
language. Still, George resolves to coach them to a state championship.
But the students have an even greater goal of their own.   Hilarious, disturbing, densely atmospheric -- and packed with surprises at every turn -- The Kids from Nowhere is a powerful, poignant story that will make you want to cry and cheer at the same time. Similar to an Alaskan Stand and Deliver, this is an inspiring story of triumph over adversity that provides a fascinating view of a remote Alaska Native village 4951

@deltadawn: Oh yes, they have a first aid kit that looks like a triage one that the EMS guys use. They don't even go out for a walk without a firearm and bear spray!
