We have a few like that but thankfully they don't usually leave them out at night when we are trying to sleep. What get me is when I know they are home and in their homes and the dog is barking endlessly in the back yard. How do they stand it? 4951

You took the words right out of my mouth!!!  I'm in the back of Elm Grove where it was always peaceful and quiet and you could hear the birds singing at times......now recently a neighbor must have 3 or 4 dogs now and during the day all they do is bark and howl and sound like they are eating each other up....oh and did I say they BARK AND HOWL/?????  What I don't understand is how the owners who live in that house can stand the noise????  I don't get it - what can be done about it?  I'm a "live and let live" kinda person, but this is dreadful - it's selfish, inconsiderate, and rude to all us neighbors around them......geez 4951

Posting here will not help. Go talk to your neighbors. Be firm, yet kind and polite. Tell them if they dont take care of the problem you will. Be prepared to do so. You need to understand the problem is NOT the poor dog., Its the a s s hole that owns him. Tackle it from that angle. I have discovered after all these years, it is much better to be a very happy ****** vs a discontented nice guy......this works for me. 4951

@Basic: Just don't leave your dog outside all day.  I have a barker to and she doesn't get long periods outside.

@Basic:
Easy peasey - teach the dog to bark on command-" speak". Then when the dog barks unsolicited and you have confirmed there is no threat then you say "No Bark". I use bitter apple spray in his mouth as negative reinforcement. Most dogs are one trial learners with the bitter apple. So when the dogs bark I check for the reason and if there's no threat then I command No bark and they stop. It helps to understand their barks. Mine have Imminent Danger ( a person at the door or in the yard, animal intruder( squirrel or another dog/cat) and Let me in or out bark. Every once in a while I have to pull out the bitter Apple to retrain- usually I just have to show them the bottle- they scatter like roaches seeing daylight.
Training a dog takes consistency, patience,follow through and time- lots of time. I dislike owners who just let their dogs bark and won't do anything about it. I have 3- if given their way they'd bark till the cows come home. I don't want to be that neighbor- I do want my dogs to alert me and I want them to stop barking on command. I know it would drive my neighbor's nuts if my dogs ran the fence yapping and barking. It drives my nuts when my neighbor's let their happens out and they run up and down the fence yapping. My dogs respond and I tell them No Bark and Leave it and they stop. Wish my neighbor's would train their dogs. And yes I've talked to them and they say- oh "theiy're so old and hard to train"- I tell them my dog is older and here's how you do it... To no avail. 4951

Thanks everyone!   I have a doggie door and that prob. doesn't help matters.And they seem to bark a lot more when Im home. Its not like I haven't tried different things and I do close the doggie door so they cant go out.  But sometimes there is nothing that can be done and they are going to bark.I don't want people thinking its the pet owners that don't do anything about this, all dogs are different and some are easier to train than others      Thanks again 4951

@mutton: I'm sure my dogs bark when I'm not home- but they're inside the house in their crates so they're not bothering the neighbors. I'm not judging- but leaving them outside unattended is not in the best interest of dogs. I have a dog that loves being outside but he's only allowed out when someone is home. Just last week someone in our rescue posted a story about her cleaning lady. She came home to find her dog dead in the yard. Seems like the dog and a copperhead decided to fight it out- both died. The snake was laying next to the dog. I know most people love their dogs and would hate to come home to this . 2 of mine are crated when I'm not home- Ol Man TJ gets the run of the house- he was always one of those dogs who never got into anything.
Dogs really are like kids ( no I'm not saying they are kids )- they require a huge commitment and a ton of training. Mine are 15,8 and 5(?) and I still work on their training. They're perpetual toddlers!! I ESP struggle with the new addition(8 year old)- he came to us last year and had never been trained- he was house broken and that was it. He was and in some ways still, a WILD man!!

Dogs can be trained to behave exactly as you want them to.  It takes, in some cases, extreme diligence and consistency as @Jpgurl said in her post.  The majority of dog owners do not have the endurance and patience to get it done.  Some owners think it's too cruel, but most simply think it's too much work.  When I had a dog, I cared about my neighbors so we trained him to bark and not bark.  Luckily, he was not too yappy to begin with so it worked well.  4951
