>> My Dog is a barker!He barks when someone is near the house or kids playing in street, If this is my fault being the a@# hole pet owner, Im sorry but please tell me how to train my dog not to bark when things are going on around the fence - I would Love to know ~ Thanks
@Basic:
Easy peasey - teach the dog to bark on command-" speak". Then when the dog barks unsolicited and you have confirmed there is no threat then you say "No Bark". I use bitter apple spray in his mouth as negative reinforcement. Most dogs are one trial learners with the bitter apple. So when the dogs bark I check for the reason and if there's no threat then I command No bark and they stop. It helps to understand their barks. Mine have Imminent Danger ( a person at the door or in the yard, animal intruder( squirrel or another dog/cat) and Let me in or out bark. Every once in a while I have to pull out the bitter Apple to retrain- usually I just have to show them the bottle- they scatter like roaches seeing daylight.
Training a dog takes consistency, patience,follow through and time- lots of time. I dislike owners who just let their dogs bark and won't do anything about it. I have 3- if given their way they'd bark till the cows come home. I don't want to be that neighbor- I do want my dogs to alert me and I want them to stop barking on command. I know it would drive my neighbor's nuts if my dogs ran the fence yapping and barking. It drives my nuts when my neighbor's let their happens out and they run up and down the fence yapping. My dogs respond and I tell them No Bark and Leave it and they stop. Wish my neighbor's would train their dogs. And yes I've talked to them and they say- oh "theiy're so old and hard to train"- I tell them my dog is older and here's how you do it... To no avail.
@Jpgurl:
How does this work when no one is home? DH is usually home so he brings in if get barky. We usually lock in house or garage otherwise...would be nice to train for when we are gone also.
@mutton: I'm sure my dogs bark when I'm not home- but they're inside the house in their crates so they're not bothering the neighbors. I'm not judging- but leaving them outside unattended is not in the best interest of dogs. I have a dog that loves being outside but he's only allowed out when someone is home. Just last week someone in our rescue posted a story about her cleaning lady. She came home to find her dog dead in the yard. Seems like the dog and a copperhead decided to fight it out- both died. The snake was laying next to the dog. I know most people love their dogs and would hate to come home to this . 2 of mine are crated when I'm not home- Ol Man TJ gets the run of the house- he was always one of those dogs who never got into anything.
Dogs really are like kids ( no I'm not saying they are kids )- they require a huge commitment and a ton of training. Mine are 15,8 and 5(?) and I still work on their training. They're perpetual toddlers!! I ESP struggle with the new addition(8 year old)- he came to us last year and had never been trained- he was house broken and that was it. He was and in some ways still, a WILD man!!
