I have one..  It was the only option with this builder.  I like having endless hot water.  It does take time for it to reach the bathrooms as the water heater is in the garage.   4951

they work great but the downside is they are expensive and the plumbing is different than the norm so it can become confusing for those with no experience with them. they do have small tankless point of use heaters also for the kitchen. the upside is that these water heaters are a demand only water heater so they don't try to keep 40 or 50 gallons of water hot 24 hours a day for the 2 hours you might be using it. 4951

It is a bit more complicated than I thought. After reading comments, also read this:http://www.houzz.com/ideabooks/21634433/list/how-to-switch-to-a-tankless-water-heaterThink when the time comes, it woud be great to be able to switch to a tankless system. 4951

@deltadawn:

They are a good idea in terms of efficiency, but in my opinion are not worth the upfront costs over a standard gas water heater. Nat gas is dirt cheap and will be for at least a decade. 4951

@buffaloglenn: but the plus side includes that the monthly operating costs  will be substantially lower year after year and that you will never have to replace a tank which rusts out. kind of a 'one and done' rather than over and over

Obviously I have home work to do on this, before it is needed. Having that tank in the attic has always bothered me. Peace of mind is priceless.  Emoticon 4951

Many companies have a hard time finding installers.  It's a tankless job. 4951

Depends where you install it. You need a 220v wire ran to the unit and of course bypass and remove the old unit. They may have 120v versions by now. 4951

The gas lines are difficult with most of the houses in Kingwood, simply because of the ages of the homes here.

@Fallon: For sure! When we replaced our furnace in our SWH home we had to upgrade our gas line. It entered our home in a lower section of the attic as gavlenized steel pipe which is normal but then became a 1/2 flex copper line running up to the second part of the attic. Copper flex may have been ok under the old county building codes but it is not now under COH codes. I ended up running the new black pipe myself.
