I live near a tiny nugget of a School Zone... It's probably 400 yards in length, and it does not have flashing lights. I drive my husband to the Park and Ride every morning and most mornings the School Zone is already "active" (7:15am). I don't know what it is about this zone, but rarely do people follow the law.... I mean, hardly anyone. Shocking. This morning at 7:30am, I turned the corner from our street at a two way stop (which is also a bus stop location, but no kids at the time), and a neighbor from around the block tried to run his stop sign so (I guess) he could be in front of me and speed down WLHP. Well, that didn't work out for him. So we both turn onto WLHP headed toward NP, and he rides my butt the few yards until the beginning of this School Zone that hardly anyone obeys.

I'm following the law, doing 20mph, and he just can't handle that, so he guns it and goes around me, in the freaking School Zone! I'm sure he got up to 45mph, at least, before the end of the zone! As he passed, I honked the horn and flashed the lights. He tapped his breaks a little because a School Bus was coming toward us. Then he turned into Elm Grove and stopped (I think he wanted me to pass him so he could get behind me... Maybe he realized what he did after seeing the bus??). I pulled up next to him and asked him to roll down his window. I said, "What was that? You passed me in a school zone?!" He said, "No, it's not." My husband told him yes it was, and to go back and take look, and then called him an idiot. What a mf!!! This guy, my neighbor. We ended up right behind him at the light at WLHP and NP.

The School Zone I'm talking about is on WLHP, just inside of Appalachian Trail and Valley Rim Drive.

Has anyone else had this much fun this morning?

People are stupid - and, unfortunately today, can't notice anything outside of their "world" unless it has big flashing lights staring them in the face, telling them it's a school zone, or to stop, and then they view that as an option.  4951

I was hoping you were going to say that you saw him pulled over getting a ticket... That never seems to happen though. They just get away with it, but usually just end up waiting at the next traffic light with you... 4951

@klp1972:

That would have been a treat. Only once have I had the glorious satisfaction of seeing an a**hole weaving/speeding through traffic, cutting people off, get pulled over and ticketed (I assume) down the road. It happened in Sugar Land. It was beautiful. 4951

@klp1972: no they save those tickets for tags or registration on soccermoms going 20 in a school zone like they are suppose too. Easier more compliant offenders...lol

The school zone for KMS on Woodland Hills Drive is ignored by many. However,  we see violators pulled over and ticketed frequently.  So not all escape the consequences.... 4951

Not that it makes it right, but that school zone is nowhere near a school.   4951

Yep, it's not within close proximity to a school, and it was put in back when part of Elm Grove attended Hidden Hollow and Creekwood, and it is there, still... And closeish to at least one bus stop that I know of.

I think it was originally put in because there is an area with no Greenbelt access, and kids walking/biking to Hidden Hollow and Creekwood would (before re-zoning) have to cross WLHP then walk/ride on WLHP for a little bit before the Greenbelt picked back up again by the Mills Branch entrance. This is where they are finishing up the extension of WLHP to go through Mills Branch Drive, and since they are building the road to where WLHP will have a full median all the way through (and will have to put in new traffic signs on the new side/section that will be Southbound), I'm curious if they will keep the School Zone or not.

Sort of the same thing, though, when School Zone lights are flashing and it's a school holiday/ no kids - you still have to slow your roll. 4951

We have new neighbors. Was behind the woman earlier this week.  She gets to the end of our street, which is a 4 way stop sigh.  No other cars around, except for a school bus.  With the lights flashing, and the stop sign out, and high school kids getting inside the bus.  She freaking passes the stopped bus!WTH?I so hope the bus driver got her license #.

@Fallon: Unfortunately there is not an intelligence test required to get a driver license.  Or a common sense test either.

It's better to let someone pass than to have them tailgating.  My concern while driving is safety. 4951

@fcabanski:

I agree, but this was/is a single lane road, with a solid, double yellow line. So he got into the oncoming traffic's lane to pass me within the zone (and surprise! ...a school bus was headed toward us - he was in their lane going the WRONG WAY). I guess 400 yards at 20mph wasn't for him this morning.

Santa, bring me a dash cam! ;-) 4951

I think school zones are silly. "We care about kids, only right here, so go slow and pay attention. But if you see a kid outside the zone, they are fair game." I liken it to the "baby on board" window decals. Okay, good for you? How is this relevant? I should change my driving based on who is in your car? Is your baby more important than my grandmother?. Ridiculous. If you can't be attentive and alert all the time then you shouldn't be driving. I will agree, however, passing a school bus, or anyone really, on a single lane road is just jerky. 4951

I think they should install cameras all over the school zones and send tickets out those who enjoy flying through the zone I'm guessing the a**hat doesn't care even if it's not his kid that he runs over? 4951

Let bad drivers drive their way.  You can still drive the right way.  Be a defensive driver.Right of way is given.  It isn't taken.Maybe that area needs the flashing lights. 4951
