Maybe I'm just getting old and crotchety, but I said no, I don't want to take this medicine.  It's one that "they" decided that anyone with a lab number over XXX needs to take.  Mine was slightly over and fluctuates at the limit most of my adult life.  So I don't want to take some new fangled drug that they will find out in 10 years causes something worse.  We agreed to a future re-check.  I guess I'm a bad patient. 4951

@MarT: I think in this situation, it depends on what it is for.  If it's something that can be controlled by lifestyle changes, I would try that first.  I tell my dr No all the time.  Emoticon

@SwimSwim: "Informed" being the operative word here.

@MarT:

In a word NO you are not a bad patient. You have to take an active interest in your health. If the doctor prescribes something that you dont agree with, you need to make an INFORMED decision about taking it or not. It is your choice but be sure you know the ramifications of your decision. It sounds likea good decision to be rechecked later and if your numbers increase then i would reconsider the medication. 4951

I just don't go to the doctor. When I was pregnant with my son I was going to go see my OBGYN as well as try out Nativiti and see who I was more comfortable with. When I called the OBGYN I asked what was done on the first visit at 10 weeks. They said a sonogram to confirm pregnancy. I told them I knew I was pregnant and didn't want one till 22 weeks to determine the sex, and that was all I wanted. The girl on the phone got super pissy and said I had to get the first sonogram and then one at every visit. I said I would not do that. I argued with her for a few more seconds and then finally said forget it, cancel my appt and remove me from your patient list. I felt that it was not the right fit nor an open patient/doctor facility. I went to Nativiti and loved it. Everything was done on my terms and I always felt so comfortable with the girls there. Best decision we made! 4951

@RogueHippEE   Hopefully, lifestyle change will take care of this, it normally does.  Once they sent me home from the hospital with oxygen because my oxygen levels plummet when I'm on pain pills and fall asleep.  After I got off the pain pills, I sent all the equipment back and signed the waiver that I was going against the doctors recommendations.  4951

Most doctors appreciate an informed interactive patient. There are many ways to say NO. Expressive a preference to avoid a certain class of drugs unless last resort is not the same as being an unruly patient. 4951

A doctor put me on Protonix for acid reflux about 15 years ago.  I started reading things that said these PPI (Proton Pump Inhibitors) are NOT recommended for long-term use and can cause other significant problems.  So several years ago, I got one of those pill cutters and cut my pills so I could gradually reduce the dosage.  Over time, I was able to eliminate the Protonix altogether.  Note: You CANNOT do this for time-release medicines.You're NOT a bad patient if you question WHY a doctor wants you to take a medicine.  I also now ask for alternative options, and if that medicine is for short-term or long-term, and what will determine if I still need to take it.  I've also learned that doctors are not always aware of drugs that should not be taken at the same time, especially if two or more doctors are prescribing drugs for you.  I read the drug info sheet that now comes with all prescription drugs (and even OTC meds) before taking the medicine.I like my doctors and trust them, but I feel more comfortable doing some research of my own. 4951

@Retired_Engineer   I take the protonix now and am reducing the strength and hope to eventually go off of it also. They want to put me on a statin because my cholesterol crossed over the 200 threshold barely.  No thanks,  I know there are things I can do to reduce it.  I had a full cardiac work up done in August, no problems.I feel like this one size fits all isn't right, it's like zero tolerance medicine.   Big Pharma would love to have us all on statins, anti-depressants and all men over 40 taking a little blue pill....... I know there is a time and place for these things.  But, I know my 50 year medical history, they know 1 blood test.  4951

I tell my dr, my pharmacist, my dogs vet and my kids drs no all the time. If they get pissy I will go elsewhere but so far that hasn't happened...LOLNot many do as much research as I do on every day meds and small health problems so I know whats best for my family and my pets but I don't argue on bigger issues. 4951

Thank you thank you RE. Yes, research everything withvtrusted resources. Also, use the same pharmacy everytime you have your meds filled. This is an added check to make sure there are no drug interactions. Dr is the first check, pharmacy the second and you are the third. Read all interactions and side effects of all medications and dont assume that if its over the counter that its safe. Some over the counter meds can interact with your prescription meds.

While im on my soap box, im going to ask a favor from everyone on here.
Please keep a list of all prescription and over the counter meds on your computer and keep it updated. Bring it to the doctor for you appointments and the hospital if you have to go. I cant tell you how many people come into the hospital and say they take a blood pressure pill that is little and white. This is frustrating to your medical professionals and dangerous for you. 4951
