I currently have (original to my 1980s bear branch house) built in double oven, built in electric cook top and a counter microwave. I'm debating on replacing with the same plus over the range microwave OR instead doing slide in oven/ range, over the range convection microwave.

I like having 2 ovens. Wondering if having the convection microwave would give me that 2nd oven convenience. The second option is cheaper.

Anyone made these decisions recently? Have anything to share or that I should consider? 4951

I've not used one, but understand that convection cooking is supposed to be faster than conventional, so two ovens, and one will be fast. If you get one, hope you will share your experience. Good luck & happy shopping. 4951

Now I would spend the money on a cooktop that heats up in seconds. That sounds like a great thing

@Fallon: Gas

I'm in the middle of our kitchen remodeling in our old SWH home. Your home sounds similar so you may need to consider some things. First, if you just have a vent hood over your cooktop you will need to make sure an over the cooktop will work there. Vent hoods are sometimes higher which can be impractical for putting things in or out of a microwave. Also microwaves draw more power and could trip a breaker. Also, depending on the oven you have now you will need to make sure a new double oven does not exceed the amperage of the oven circuit. Newer convection ovens with self clean features might draw more power and you can't always just up the circuit breaker but might have to run a heavier wire from  your breaker panel. That happened to my stepson in Atascocita. Convection does speed up baking and roasting by moving the air around and also provides for more even temperature in all parts of the oven. 4951

Great responses. Thanks for the input. I'm leaning toward the less expensive option of a slide in oven/ range. My current range is electric- I'm really hoping we pull it out and find we have gas hookups also- does anyone have that? Sure would be a nice surprise. I'd prefer gas, but if we don't already have hookups I'll go with glass.

A kitchen renovation isn't really in the budget right now but all appliances are failing quickly!

Anyone have a contractor they'd recommend for retro fitting cabinets? 4951
