I've seen this commercial several times, but it just registered what they were saying. This is the final season of the ballet here in Houston. That has been such a huge part of Houstonian's Christmas festivities for so long.

Does anyone know any details as to why it is ending?

I can't image no Nutcracker Market, but I'm sure the Houston Ballet will just rename it if they have to. 4951

The original guy that has been in charge of it either retired or has retired already. The new person directed the production last year, and tried to keep it as close to the original as possible, but after this year, he felt it was better to retire the production so that it could be his predecessor's legacy, and so that he may start his own. Apparently the new production is already in the works, although they haven't released what it would be yet. 4951

That makes sense. New artistic director wants to do his own thing...I get it. Last call for this production but not for the show itself. 4951

@CBP210: That's a great idea... I have fond memories of DD and I driving to the "big city" to see it. It was our big Mommy-daughter Christmas event. We went out to eat and everything!! Ahhhh, those were the days. Alas, she's not married and moved away, but I still have the memories.  Emoticon

It's Dd and hubby's annual date since she was 3, they missed a couple of years when she was living in England, but it's an important event to them. 4951

I took 3 of my GD to see it in 2013. We were all dressed up, even I wore a coat and tie! I took them out to eat after the performance. I think they will always remember it. Here is a shot taken in the lobby. 4951

We go every single year, and I love it, but if I'm reading this correctly - they're still doing it, just with new choreography, new costumes, new direction.  www.houstonchronicle .com/entertainment/a rts-theater/article/ Houston-Ballet-'m good with that.  It's time.  They've done the exact same performance for as long as I can remember, and it's lovely, but I'll look forward to a new interpretation. 4951

I was wondering the same thing when I heard the radio commercial yesterday. I haven't seen the Nutcracker in so long;  I'll have to see if my mom wants to go before this production ends. 4951

I'm glad it'll still be there, re-done or not- it's something every little girl (or boy) should be able to see!! 4951

A new artistic director, new sets and a re-vamp of the ballet is fine.  Like I said, I just can't imagine the holidays in Houston without it or the Nutcracker Market.  That's why they say "Ben Stevenson's THE NUTCRACKER" and in 2016, Stanton Welch will take over the production.  I'm sure it will be amazing. 4951
