I was just reading a news story on how the new keyless ignition systems many new cars come with have been responsible for several deaths or injuries from people forgetting to turn off the vehicle and letting it run in an attached garage after they have entered the home. Yes it sounds stupid that someone would forget but it has happened, usually survivors tell how they were preoccupied and just forgot to push the on/off button as they left the car.  Quite a few people nationwide have died from carbon monoxide poisoning. My wife rents a car every week for commuting while on this project in Texas City and many of the cars come with the keyless ignition. I don't see the big deal with keyless as you have to find a place to put the big key fob. Not so big an issue for women with purses but I find it uncomfortable in my pocket and usually put it in the cup holder. At least with a real key you have a place to store the key fob. 4951

Just got a new truck (pick up on Thursday) and it has keyless ignition.   Key fob is the same size as the one on my Chevy so that really is not a big deal.  It will be interesting to get used to I think. 4951

Yes, some of them are smaller than others but when we get rental cars they usually have 2 fobs and an ID tag all wired together which isn't too comfortable in a pocket! 4951

I can see how people could leave the car running . Dw's car is keyless and she learned her lesson when she got out at the store and left fob in cup holder. Yea doors locked and she was SOL ....a very nice couple brought her to the house to get the spare . Still some good people out there . 4951

I would never buy a keyless car. Deal breaker that goes for onstar or any monitoring system too. 4951

We had one rental car between two of us when I was travelling for work, we were at two separate sites, about 2 miles apart.  Our rental car had keyless ignition.  I drive to the other site to pick up my colleague for lunch, after lunch I dove back to my site, jumped out of the car with the fob in my pocket, coworker jumps in the driver seat and takes off.  The engine will not shut down while in drive, so he gets to his site with the car and I have the keys with me at my site.  Never even thought about that. 4951

@staylifted: Supposedly my new truck will not allow the doors to lock if the fob is inside the vehicle.  I will have to look into that a little more to make sure...

When I first got mine, we went to Canino's on Airline.
We milled around in and out, it was an extremely hot day.
We paid and made our way to the car. I unlocked it by pushing the button, dh put our purchases in back. As I opened the door I said omg wtf, it's running and freezing cold.
The key was in my pocket, we moved to a better parking spot and there were a few of us caught up talking.

I now make a point to check sunroof and windows, lights and I'm mindful about shutting it off.
I have dropped dh off at the store to run and grab with him having the key in his pocket. It is displayed on the dash, no key. If I had gone to the pumps while he was in the store I would have to wait for him. You have to have the key in the car for it to start. He can't be loading the back and me start the car.
We like it, however we have changed the batteries in the fobs once. While changing the one we carry, we change the spares too. We have never used them but if needed, they need to work.
We've never tried to use the key manually. I don't think mine has e er been out of the fob. 4951

@butterflykisses:  Same here. My last car has push button start, and so does the new one.  Never once forgot to turn it off.

I also have a keyless ignition and do not care for it.  I have forgotten to turn off the ignition when I arrive somewhere, not used to that!  A good idea would be for a beeping sound goes off if you park and walk away, reminding to turn off ignition.  4951

My husband's car is keyless and I hate it.  I refuse to drive it because I always seem to get out without turning  the ignition off.  Have known several people to leave the fob in the car and lock the doors too.  4951

On one of our rental cars with the keyless ignition I remember I was doing the driving and we were running some errands. I opened the car to put in some groceries and I had put my cell phone, wallet and the key fob on top of the car roof while I loaded things in the back seat. Somehow I got into the car without grabbing my stuff and pushed the START button. A message displayed on the car's electronic interface saying something like "key not in vehicle". I think it was a Ford, not sure if others do that but I was glad it told me so I didn't drive off and loose everything 4951

My mother constantly leaves hers running.  Her car is so quiet, she can't  tell if it's running.  I told her to play the radio.  If the radio is on when you get out of the car, then you forgot to turn it off.  SMH 4951

@tatertot58: So if someone is chasing you, you can't jump in your truck and lock the doors?

We don't own one like that, but the rental or two I've had, or a couple of friends cars, I was not a big fan of it. It just might take some getting used to, but if you want to know why car jackings are going up instead of car thefts..... 4951
