Frequent urination was the first. Being prone to UTI, that's what I took her in for. The test for a UTI came back negative, so I mentioned to the doc that she was also very thirsty and drinking a lot. That is what tipped them off to do a glucose test.
She also had some sudden weight loss which became more evident after diagnosis. We caught it early, but she still lost her sight within 2 yrs. The diagnosis scared me, but we have been able to manage the disease and treatment. She is on a glucose management dog food from the vet, and I give her 1 injection per day with her morning meal. Each case is differeny though.
@ms21883: Oh wow that sounds exactly like my dog. He's 14 years old. I noticed lately he's be accidentally peeing puddles, which was really aggravating but then I noticed he would be so thirsty. Â When I saw him choose water over his food (dachshunds love food), I became concerned. Then this past weekend, I was on his level and noticed his chest wasn't as full as it usually is.Â
