I had an all white kitchen for 12 years so when we had our current home built I was a little nervous about going with the new trend of very dark, almost black cabinets and black and stainless appliances. We paired it with a light colored flooring and I think it turned out well. I'm just not sure how it will look in 15 years. I'll probably be ready to remodel by then anyway, though. I do think white kitchens are a timeless look that never go out of style.

@yankeejessica: Did you see the new stainless steel black appliances?  I thought those were a little cool looking.  DH likes black appliances and wood.  I am not that picky.

Stainless steel serves a real purpose, bacteria struggles to grow on it unlike painted surfaces.  4951

@Maisey1: Yours looks beautiful, the ones I posted made the rooms look very small.  I don't like stark white or all dark, I think there should be a balance.

@RogueHippEE: I agree - my husband also wanted those dark wood floors that are trendy right now and I told him to pick dark cabinets or dark floors cuz you can't have both. I am not living in a cave!

@Maisey1: Haha...I am now living in a home that has wood paneling, dark brick fireplace, med/dark wood mantle, a dark wood built in bookcase and wood flooring we installed after moving in. ETA: In my defense, it was a foreclosure and we moved in Aug. so I haven;t had much time to change things EmoticonETA again: I also live in the country now (less than 800people are here) so wood is probably the "in" thing Emoticon

@RogueHippEE: Home improvement projects like that are (usually) fun though - and paint can go a long way in lightening things up inexpensively!

@Maisey1: I picked out paint colors for the living room before we moved in.  We have redone our dd's room and laid flooring down throughout.  I have the bay window and built ins I wanted so I am happy.  The rest will come with time.

I know kitchens are a big expense but I had never seen a kitchen with non-flush fitting doors until I came here, American kitchens seem to only now be catching up (in the structures not the styles) with where Europe has been for probably more than 40 years. Seeing the cabinet between the doors just looks old fashioned to me.With regard to the colours I am a big fan of greys and solid colours right now, don't mind dark wood if the style is a bit more contemporary, I also like different colour top and bottom cabinets. 4951

@CartmanUK35:

I disagree. When I see the solid front on cabinets, I think back to the 50's-70's with ugly utilitarian cabinets and God awful colors. I think kitchens now are more like pieces of furniture. 4951

@CartmanUK35: Cultural difference are more to play here.  I don't even mean, you are from the UK and most of us were born in the US.I grew up in a home with tile countertops.  I prefer those over granite any day(I would prefer Corian or glass, etc)...but you get my point-hopefully.Of course, my parents now live in a house with farm blue laminate countertops and the country hear wall paper.
