A Massachusetts man whose Jeep got stuck
in a mud pool while off-roading with his girlfriend says a towing
company presented him with a bill totaling nearly $49,000 for pulling it
out.Joel Ramer told local TV station WFXT
that he ended up in a mud pit last week in Walpole, a suburb south of
Boston, and called for a tow. After 12 hours of work, the towing
company, Assured Collision, extracted the vehicle. But when he went to pick it up, Ramer says he was given a bill for $48,835.“He informed me there was some damage done to the vehicle, but didn't
get into details,” Ramer told the station. “He also informed me the
bill was $48,000. I thought they made a mistake."In truth, it
seems that Ramer and his girlfriend were being naughty in their off-road
adventure -- in addition to getting the vehicle stuck, he also got
arrested and cited for trespassing and disturbing the peace, WFXT
reported. Ramer said he was unknowingly on private property owned by a
utility company. Here’s the, er, break-down of some of the items
on the bill: $16,000 for an on-scene supervisor at $1,250 an hour. More
than $10,000 for an off-road recovery incident response unit. A $5,000
fee for “dangerous condition liability insurance.” All in all, $48,835. 4951

What a moron. If he got the Jeep stuck then he obviously has NO clue how to drive off road!! We used to drive off road in the Midwest ALL the time (with permission) and like the Boy Scouts- we were prepared- winch and hi lift jack as we could end up many miles from the nearest road. We never had to winch ourselves but we pulled plenty of morons out. My favorite "Hey look at what I can do" moron was the  guy who insisted he knew how to crawl a rock and proceeded to tear off his transmission pan. I'm sure he paid a pretty penny to get towed too!!! 4951

When I lived in Colorado, my boyfriend at the time got his truck stuck on the side of a small mountain on the way to his cabin.  It was so far off that he had to climb out my side of vehicle. That was not a fun 1 mile hike to the house.  Luckily, his neighbor helped him pull the truck out the next morning.  4951

So he is complaining that as someone breaking the law he should pay for the damage to his own vehicle? What about paying for the damage he caused as well.Did he really think his towing company shouldn't be compensated for their time and equipment.

@Stealth83: You don't think $48,000 is a little too much for that service?

@notfromhere: Depends on how far out in the boonies and how bad he wanted to get his car out. As I've said- I've been in some very very remote places in KY and TN ESP. We're talking hours from a good gravel road. I've been so far out in the boonies that there was no mail delivery, electricity, gas or running water to the very few houses we came across. So yeah- 48k might seem reasonable. Of course if he had come prepared ( or had an ounce of common sense to maybe NOT get himself stuck) then he would've not been charged an arm and a leg.
We always carried, a winch, high lift jack, 10 gallons of gas, 6 gallons of water, food, tarp, ax, first aid kit flashlight, matches, battery operated air pump, a tool kit, duct tape and toilet paper whenever we went off road 4951

@Jpgurl: Thanks for the explanation. That was very informative. Just one question: why did you waste space with the toilet paper?

@Jpgurl: Walpole is sort of in the corner of two major interstates between downtown Boston and Gillette Stadium where the Patriots play.  They either gouged him or there's a LOT more to this story.
Had my Jeep since 2003 and agree with everything you said about being prepared.  Owning a Jeep used to be a mindset.  Now with all of these 4-door, grocery getting, pavement hugging, soccer mom carrying abominations out there, they are becoming nothing more than the douche-mobile of the 201X's. 4951

@notfromhere: Because our adventures were dawn to dusk affairs and there are no portapotties in the boonies- when you gotta go- you gotta go- boys on the drivers side- girls on the passenger side- watch for snakes, ticks and poison oak and ivy!!
