We did that about 3 years ago. My wife hesitated since she had had that number since 1986 but we realized the family and close friends always called our cell phones anyway. We also got tired of the robo calls at election time or the calls from companies wanting to clean our carpets or asking for old clothes for a donation. Seems like so long ago that we had a telephone in every room and a answering machine. 4951

Our house phone has been gone for 5 years now, with a brief few months when dh was working from home. It did come in handy when my phone got jacked but soon found being tethered to a line very annoying.
I hesitate to change my number so I may add a line and then dump it. No sense getting a new number just to give it to the same old companies. I figured I'd phase it out. 4951

Ya can't slam the phone down on someone anymore. Lol

As far as robo calls, they have been hitting our cells. The other day bc/bs shield called about a service available with my plan. An nurse consulting service or something. The woman started talking and I got rude. How do I know this? She called my husband and explained the program and said, your wife mistook me for a telemarketer. Before I can finish she told me screw the Bahamas, I wanna go to Tahiti and hung up. Lol

As soon as a stranger starts blah blah, I said no and hang up. 4951

@tatertot58:

I have a business and some calls come from non contacts or another line. So as good of a tool that it is, it has it's flaws. I just roll with it. I rarely answer anyway. There are 8 messages and I lost count of the emails. Monday is work, while Sunday is funday with family.

Then again I really don't take life so seriously. Life can change in a flash. 4951

I haven't had a home phone in over 10 years. Got rid of mine just after my husband and I both got our own cell phones and had 3 telemarketer calls come in one evening while eating dinner. I do not miss those calls!!  When we built our current house we only put in one phone jack - and it's for the computer. 4951

LOL - I'm getting a landline in 18 months, when my vell phone plan expires. No more cell phone for this guy. I've had enough.

@jax: That's awesome! I would love to do that, but with two young drivers, I'm too worried I'd miss an emergency phone call. Also, I rely on it for online coupons at the checkout,and price comparisons when shopping.

@allymansfield: How about "I'll give you a ring later" Can you imagine the look on a kids face if  you gave them an old rotary dial phone to use? They wouldn't have any idea.

@Chrisinkingwood: My mom used to have a "princess" phone in her bedroom and it was rotary.  I grew up with my grandmother living next door and every night before dinner, if we were eating at our house, my mom would tell me to go get her or call her to come over.  I would always go upstairs and call so I could use that phone.  I thought it was the coolest thing!
