I was invited to sit with my GD who is in first grade at Oak's El over in Atascocita. She got an award for good conduct and my DiL could not get off from work so I went. Lunch was at 11:00am, awfully early for me so I figured I would just sit with her while she ate. She got her lunch and met up with me, we got to sit at nice tables on the stage. Both her parents work long days down near the Galleria so the kids are on the lunch plan and don't take lunch to school which is what my kids did.What she got was interesting. Definitely pretty much kid friendly but hardly healthy.  She got a small bowl of Mac & Cheese, a small bread roll and French fries with catsup. On the side she has a snack bag of raisins and chocolate milk (I think they get their choice of plain or chocolate). She got an ice cream bar as a dessert treat that they only do on Fridays... there are other choices like chips or a cookie but she chose the ice cream. So the main meal was all low quality carbs.... macaroni, bread and potatoes. And the sides were all super sweet. I looked at the labels and the raisins had 18grams of sugar, the chocolate milk had 16 grams of sugar and I didn't get to see the label for the catsup or the ice cream but I bet there was no shortage of sugar in them.Yes, the bread was whole wheat but the roll was so stale she didn't eat it and I could barely break it in two. She never touched it. And the tray was the only thing they took back to wash, the silverware was plastic and went in the trash so more crap for landfills.  And we wonder why some kids are overweight or fighting obesity. And also it is sad that former AG commissioner Susan Combs tried to improve school food but now we have this idiot Sit Miller who wants to bring back deep fried foods and sodas to schools. Yikes. 4951

School lunches suck. It takes me 15 minutes to pack lunches for both my kids. Sandwich, fresh fruit, a handful of chips. Maybe a cookie if I'm feeling festive. A refillable water bottle I fill with ice water. 4951

That's pretty sad.  What happened to all the healthy lunch talk that went around not too long ago.  What do they charge for a mess like that these days?  When I bought lunch it was $0.40 and a whole lot better than what you described 4951

I have always packed my kids a lunch and now that they are older, they get to pack their own lunches. No way am I spending $25 a week for them to eat crappy school food when they can make their own healthier lunch for much less! 4951

Yes, I agree and would pack a lunch for them if I were the parent but I am not. My DiL lost both parents to cancer as a teenager and I don't think she ever got that kind of training from her mom as far as cooking of food preparation.  They both leave for work at about 6am, the kids all get their own breakfast, the younger 3 walk to school a few blocks away, the other 2 catch buses to the middle and high school.  The parents usually don't get home until 5 or 6, the kids sometimes cook dinner. It's a very different way of life than when my first wife and I raised our 5 kids. I did also sit with my other 2 grandkids when they came to lunch, one is in 3rd grade and the other is in 5th. They both got a cheeseburger option, it didn't look too bad and had a whole wheat bun. There was a side of chopped lettuce for the hamburger but neither ate any. They each had french fries and some kind of spicy Doritos as the Friday treat choice. Oh and they also had chocolate milk.  The sad thing about the school food is that so much is about low fat and cholesterol and that's fine but there is no prohibition on the amount of sugar in the meals. 4951

If they have something my DD likes then she takes money for lunch.  If not she brings her own.  I went a few weeks ago and was very surprised.  It was french toast sticks, Dole peaches in a sealed container, a bowl of fresh strawberries, white milk (she said the chocolate is gross) and something called dragon punch.  My DD loves to eat ice or freeze a juice pouch rip it open and eat the ice.  The dragon punch is partially frozen and it's fruit and veggies and she ate everything on her plate.  She also takes a water bottle, gogurt, sugar free pudding and sometimes mandarin oranges or apple sauce for a snack at school.  She usually comes home with everything but the gogurt but she has it in case she gets hungry.She takes either PB&J or ham and cheese if she takes her lunch.  That's all she ever wants.  Last year she would take chicken noodle soup or ravioli's in a thermos but I guess it hasn't been hot enough yet for her to want something different.  Sometimes she wants dinner left overs but I can't figure out how to keep those hot without them all mushing together in her thermos. 4951

You didn't mention the choice of baked beans ,the same one would serve at home. Broccoli and carrot medeley or fresh oranges that was offered The mac and cheese is whole grain ,
Kids need more carbs than adults . I've had the Mac and cheese and it's actually pretty good . I agree over all the meals lack in flavor, but they are basically nutritionally perfect ( per USDA guidelines. ) 4951

@Lace:
The other choice on Friday was a hamburger and at our school they were also selling what was left of the boxes with salad, a boiled egg and wheat crackers. The kids can pick the entre and sides. They also had bananas.
I am of the opinion that school lunch is more of a snack to get them through the day. You can't rely on a school lunch to provide much nutritional value. They have to buy in bulk, and quite honestly the healthier options end up in the trash. Sad but true.
I do feel that HISD could make more (if they make any) items from scratch. My sis in law is a lunch lady in the Seattle area, and they actually cut up fresh green beans and fresh fruit salad in addition to making their own pizza crust, etc.

We pack our dd's lunch but dinner is provided for her everyday if need be.  She only takes advantage of that when DH has to work late. 4951

I pack every night, too. I get that the parents are tired when they come home, then help with homework, etc., but even packing 3 nights a week is healthier! Everything in the kids' lunch goes into the lunchbox, in the fridge, the night before. So, chips or fruit snacks do get refrigerated! Emoticon

For our school, we have to order 2 weeks in advance and it's $4 per kid (that could be one piece of pizza, side of veg, half a piece of fruit, and milk or juice. I just can't afford to pay $8/day for that.
