Depends on the phone and app, if you can use offline maps you can safely turn off your data and still use the GPS. 4951

I drove from PA to UT, used a lot. I ended up going over my limit (think 5) but not by much. Verizon sends me alerts at 75%. If you get those alerts it's a big help. Your trip is rather short so unless you are at the point you should be ok. Next time though I'm using my garmin for long trips. Garmin is better because no data usage and it's satellite, not towers so the signal never goes dead. 4951

Going to Austin and back I was pretty surprised how much it used. I want to say upwards of tens of megabytes. I was using samsung navigation which uses google maps. But it saved me a number of delayed minutes on the trip by giving me alternate routes when traffic backed up in route. You can turn off navigation when you know where you are, like main highways and such, and turn it back on when you get in cities or close to your destination. Also in the case of google, use regular maps instead of satellite as the graphics do not take as much data to download. 4951

A good alternative to Google Maps or Apple Maps is WAZE. It's a free GPS app that takes traffic, speed traps, construction, accidents, and even potholes into account and gives you shortcuts if you need to avoid them. By far the best GPS app out there and much better than the 2 big ones. 4951

When traveling far, GPS devices are better than phones. Â Phones use up a lot of memory and you could lose your signal. Â I only use the GPS function on my phone when I'm trying to find some place in my general vicinity (like anywhere in Houston). 4951
