Another place Democrats have turned into a winning place. Tourism is what drives their economy. And I am pretty sure going to a beautiful island and seeing all that homelessness just isn't going to be top on a lot of peoples lists.

@Fallon: I went back and read the rest, it also doesn't really seem like they are doing anything to help the people out of the situation.  I mean, they aren't requiring that alcoholics and drug abusers get clean, mental patients get screened and helped, etc.

Hey if you are going to be homeless, what better place than Hawaii?  Perfect weather, guilable tourists year round.  Spend your last dime on a plane ticket and live in paradise on the governments dime.  Sure beats NYC or some other place with winters! 4951

you don;t know a fricking thing about it. homelessness increased in hawaii because of the influx of the wealthy who drove the cost of a small fixer-upper house up to over a half a million dollars. then you add in the recession which caused huge layoffs in the tourism businesses, a field which is a dominant employer in the islands and THAT is why homelessness increased. it had nothing to do with democrats or republicans but did have to do with the economy and economics in general. the same thing has happened in places like jackson hole, aspen and telluride where the locals were simply priced out of the housing and real estate market by the influx of people whose buying power drove real estate values to the point that some of the local people working in restaurants and other service jobs taking care of those new residents were living in tents during the winter. 4951

Wasn't it Hawaii that was buying plane tickets for their homeless to go to big cities in mainland cities?  Or, maybe I just made that up, too lazy to research right now, it's Saturday night and hubby made me shop with him all day.  I hate shopping! 4951

what hawaii was doing for a while was sending people HOME. the state was buying one way tickets back to the mainland homes for those who came thinking they could live without working. it was cheaper than supporting them. it has been a common practice of many cities across the country to put pain in the *** malefactors on a one way bus to florida or los angeles to get them out of dodge and send them elsewhere to become someone else's problem. that is one reason why florida has a reputation of having a lot of loons there 4951

@MarT:

Yes they did for a while fly them back to mainland. They've had this problem for a while but the activists stepped in to "help" and now the problem is huge. 4951

I also think I read stories about the homeless riding air conditioned buses all day, which really was a put off to tourists.  San Francisco is the same, their homeless population is so visible, add Seattle and Portland too.   4951

The state won't be able to afford to keep it up if they don't treat their mental illness or drug problems. 4951
