We need to do some research and pricing as I should have the first lower cabinet done in a few weeks. We know the general color palate we want and at Home Depot and Lowes we have seen samples we like around $52 to $62 per square foot for the 3cm thickness. We are also just doing the basic radius edge which is usually free.  We went to that granite yard up in Porter across from Home Depot but they weren't open.   Any  suggestions for other places is appreciated. 4951

Pickings are slim in KW area. New warehouse south of 1960 before you get to 45. Big one over in Aldine. Bunch of them inside BW8 below 290. 4951

@Chrisinkingwood:
Why would you go to Lowes or HD? They just sub contract it out and charge their profit on top of that. Plenty of granite contractors can do it for 30% less or more.

@chilladahun: agreed. Those should be the last places you should go. If you have the time and energy, go to floor and decor out on 45

I think it's worth it to go back to the yard in Porter, he's very clear in his pricing, we paid for what was used, not full slabs, fast service and we were happy with the work.

I went to 3 big yards, none would give me pricing, they would let me look, but pricing was done through the 3rd party fabricator. 4951

Lowes will have some great sales.  We used them for one simple reason.   If the subcontractor screws up, you are still covered, because Lowe's will make things right.   I have a 6 foot island, a 4 foot bar, and lot of countertops.  I got all of our granite, backsplash, sink and faucet for under 7K from Lowes.  We went to the granite yard, picked out the granite, chose the edges and got a designers services,  We had the work done in 2 days.  Beyond pleased with the all aspects of work.  Sometimes Lowe's or HD is the right way to go.  If you use the granite place beside Sam's be very careful.  They close up shop every other month or so.  Be sure you do not prepay for anything there, or you could very well be burning that money.

@Fallon:

That's what I like about lowes. They stand behind everything. If you use their subs, they guarantee it 100%. I do a lot of business with them and they are so helpful. 4951

@chilladahun: We went more just to look at colors and types of granite. And we knew they would be higher but we figured it is a starting point and a price to beat!

@MarT:

Did they do the sink and the tile backsplash too, or did you have to find someone else to do that? 4951

@ms21883

They installed the sink we bought, undermount, drilled the holes for the faucet and soap dispenser. We wanted a different sink than what they had. They cut the hole for the cooktop in the island.

I didn't ask about tiling, we wanted to do as much as possible ourselves, we did the plumbing for the sink, faucet and garbage disposal ourselves because it was a pretty simple set up with only one large single bowl sink.

We like the simple square edge and I don't recall them charging us for extra things.

We are going to replace our bathroom vanity tops, sinks and faucets, we will use them again. 4951

We haven't replaced our countertops but I have to say I was EXTREMELY pleased with the contractors Lowes used to install our carpet. I've had Capet installed before in other houses but have never seen work like this. The guy who did our stairs was an artist- took his time to follow the line of each stair- not just cover and staple. The seams are flawless.  I realize The box stores are going to be higher but I'd they use the quality contractors on kitchen installs that they used on carpets- I'm sold!! 4951

@Jpgurl: they are higher, because they hire another company to do the labor. You are just paying them to be a middleman. Do your homework, hire a quality contractor and pay about 30% less.

I used a GC  who is from the area (West East Construction I can send you pictures and his contact info). I purchased my granite from Houston Granite and Mable located in the parking lot of the Northwest Mall. (http://houstongranitemarblecenter.com/) I think they also do installation but I knew my guy his subcontractors and liked the work. I honestly don't know off the top of my head how much I paid as this was done about a year ago. I can look when I get home.

@chilladahun: AND THERE lies the problem- we have found NO quality contractors!!!!
We do all of our own remodeling because of that problem. When we interview for contractors we have as yet to find one who can live up to our standards. But laying granite is not possible- so yeah I'm Illini to pay the middle man if they secure quality contractors. The contractors we've worked with through Lowes-have a contract with Lowes and only do jobs through them. Not taking my chances on a half a** job paying top $$. Some highly recommended contractors who "have made the grade" around here didn't make our grade! We know what we're doing and ask the hard question. Yeah their work looks good on the surface - but isn't necessarily good behind the surface.
