I skimmed over the online edition in less than 5 minutes. Most of the stories are the same ones from the past week, they are so bad at updating news. And most stories are nothing but slide shows of images with a sentence or 2 instead of an actual article. Amazing that a major city like Houston has such a bad news source. 4951

I can't remember the last time I read a newspaper.

I used to really enjoy my morning coffee and paper. I'd get everyone off and settle in with cup and paper. Have me a little breakfast and get my day going.
I stopped reading when it got to blurry to see. Dh insisted I try readers and boom world became clearer again. However the content had been lost on bad cut reporting. It was more fun editing for mistakes. I don't think anyone proof reads before print.
I'm a great blooper finder. 4951

I have found the online edition to be much worse than the real paper.  I read it everyday.  Nothing like the smell of newspaper and ink on your fingers after you are through.

I use visit chron online for most my news but noticed many of the stories wanted me to sign in or something so that I could finish reading an article so I moved on to other news sites that allow me to see the news without signing up. The last thing I need is another user name and password to have to keep track of. 4951

The Chronicle's online version is horrible.  They still have some really great stuff in the print edition, but they don't make it available online, which I get.  However, their online is such a turn off that I hardly buy their print version.  It's quick summary stories with no real info, photo slide shows, and trashy pictures from bars and street festivals.  None of their issues or trends stuff makes it online. 4951

I can remember when I got the Chronicle delivered early each morning and the Post was waiting for me when I got home. I also got the WSJ on weekdays and the NYTimes Sunday paper.  I recycled a lot of paper back then. 4951

you have to remember journalism in general has suffered the last 10 to 12 years as newspapersand other forms of media have laid off staff reporters. it seems themedia laid off those with more experience and seniority to save on operational costs without having a view to what that would do to their product. that is why you have dumbshits who can't seem to write coherent accounts of the news and impart actual factual information spreading gobbledygook and failing at their jobs. 4951

@ProblemAgain:  I started reading newspapers at an early age because it was a good example of spelling and grammar.  Now, I find myself shaking my head at the frequent errors.  TV news has shifted from reporting the news to entertainment.  We also get biased news depending on the source.@HotterThanYou:  @tatertot58:@Maisey1:You must not be looking at the subscription version of the Houston Chronicle.  The online version is an exact copy of the printed version excluding sales flyers from Wednesday and Sunday.  I get the paper version delivered on those days.    If you are looking at chron.com, that's just a free news blog with only bits and pieces of the full newspaper.

@Retired_Engineer: to actually be a good journalist requires a pretty broad knowledge base of the world including history  and causal events. that in and of itself is part of getting older and acquiring knowledge. thus a requirement to be a wellrounded  journalist has to do to a certain extent with age. when the writers the media keeps are younger than your underwear, that might appear to be a problem. and that explains why the reporting is so myopic. the people reporting just DON'T know enough to even know they don't know enough.

I liked the Houston Post better. Houston Press is better than the Chronicle. 4951

a great example of the ineptitude was just on this morning on a national newscast. it was on a financial news broadcast where they had a segment from a reporter about volkswagen and the problems they are now having because of the software they installed that would shift engine controls to allow it to pass emissions testss and then shift the settings back for normal usage. the poorly termed media journalist actually thought that volkswagen had altered the engines by using different parts in those for the united states. of course this also necessitates her being butt ignorant of the fact that some of europe has even higher emission controls than the united states in general.....therefore the reporter gets a two/fer....being doubly ignorant all in one story...quite the feat. 4951
