Over the past couple of months, it has shown partial black sections on pages and sometimes freezes up.  I've also noticed that when I plug it in to recharge it and just leave it, the indicator light would change from yellow to green (as it is supposed to) but if I leave it plugged in, the light sometimes changes back to yellow.  Last night, it was frozen in sleep mode.  I plugged it in while troubleshooting on Amazon.  I found that these are common symptoms for when the battery starts going out.  I ordered a new Kindle to replace it but was concerned that I would lose all my highlights and the places-farthest-read on all of my books.  I knew all my books are on an Amazon account I share with my wife.  I just hope I don't have to go through 600+ books to figure out which ones I've read and where I stopped on other books.After my old Kindle charged for a while, I was able to get it unfrozen.  I just hope the transfer to the new Kindle goes well!Has anyone else replaced a Kindle?  What was your experience? 4951

I got a new kindle and as long as you set up your new one with the same email/password etc everything transferred exactly the way it was on my old one.  You need to set the new one up before deactivating your old one.  Had a friend who deactivated first and lost most everything. 4951

I have different problems with my Kindle. It stops responding to touch on parts of the screen, and then thinks I'm touching a spot on the left when I'm actually touching the right side (basically just thinks I'm touching a different part of the screen). So now it's so bad it's useless. I've tried everything under the sun to troubleshoot except getting it replaced. Turns out this is a very common problem too. @Burnsway is talking about the soft reset. There's a hard reset as well. Research some stuff online and see if any of that helps.I've read stories that even with replacements there are problems, Kindle just has kinks they haven't worked out yet. 4951

@tatertot58:  That's what a service guy on Amazon's Chat Help told me last night.  He said to register the new Kindle to my Amazon account, then set the Kindle email address to the same as the old Kindle, then deactivate the old Kindle.  He also recommended destroying the old Kindle so someone else doesn't get ahold of it.  I will get to see what a Kindle looks like on the inside! I spent about two hours researching the problem last night.  I think it wouldn't respond/reset because the battery was too low.  I had charged it earlier in the day but the charge light went from green to yellow, which indicates a problem with the battery (or circuitry) draining the battery.

@Retired_Engineer: I had similar problems. They replaced it once and then offered to put in a new battery and other stuff but I got a Paperwhite for Christmas so I gave my old one to my SIL after I deactivated it. The Paperwhite is far better than my old one. 4951

@tatertot58:  I also went with the PaperWhite version.  My original is a generation 2 with the keyboard.

I just replaced the paperwhite my son gave me, his handmedown, with a new ipad.  I like reading on it better than the Kindle.  The screen is bigger, and back lit.  And I can use it for my Kindle books and the books from itunes.

@Fallon:  I tried using my Samsung tablet with an Amazon app.  I stopped because the battery life of a tablet is so short.  For most of its life, my Kindle would go weeks between recharges.  When reading on my tablet, the battery would need to be recharged in less than half a day.

@Retired_Engineer:  The paperwhite battery goes even longer.  I prefer reading on it vs my IPAD because the screen is a matte finish.  The shiny IPAD screen just doesn't do it for reading books.  Need to get yourself one of the covers that automatically turns the Kindle off when you close it and on when you open it.  They are worth the $$

I've found that I can switch between my paperwhite and iPad seamlessly - all of my books are available and it saves my place, etc. (I don't have any highlights, but I'm assuming that it would save those, too, if I used them.)  So if you've got your amazon account up-to-date, it ought to be fine.  I would make sure that your kindle wasn't in "airplane mode" or anything like that, so that it syncs with your account.I love my paperwhite more than most everything else I own.  Is that what you ordered?  It's light, the battery lasts WEEKS, and the screen is lovely.  I don't know how they do that - I can adjust the light so I can read in the dark, yet there's NO glare.  I ditto @tatertot58 - I bought an $8 case for it, and it does the magical turn it on/off when you open it but it adds no bulk. 4951

Well, I got the new Kindle yesterday.  Set it up to my account on Amazon.  When I tried to assign it the same email address my old Kindle has, it said I cannot duplicate email addresses.  All of my books are still on the "cloud" but it looks like I'll have to transfer them individually to my new Kindle. 4951

@Retired_Engineer:
Once the new account is set up. Deactivate the e-mail address from your old one. Then you can go into Amazon and send all the books to your new Kindle. I sent all the ones I had not read at once. Hopefully they still have that feature... 4951
