These early release days at the kiddo's school really kill my day. Luckily she can just tag along with me from job site to job site. How do people without flexible work schedules handle it? 4951

Our school district in our old state pretty much stopped 1/2 days because it was such a burden on parents, they also did away with a lot of random days off for elementary age, pushed the start date to later in August (kept creeping earlier and earlier), ended the school year the Friday before Memorial Day and lumped the days off together which makes getting childcare a little easier.  4951

I swear, when I was a kid, we never had this many early release days.  It seems like every other week, they get out early for no reason whatsoever.  My mom can pick her up so it's not usually a scramble, but I have to know about it in advance and plan, and I'm not so good with those things sometimes.Today, the only real irritation was that I forgot and made her a lunch anyway.  I hate making lunches and I would have been very pleased to know that I had the day off. 4951

We use the YMCA for afterschool care so, I'll just wait until the mad house settles down and then go and get her.  She still gets out early and I don't have to fight the traffic.  Win/Win 4951

NCISD and the district our dd is in now has very few earl releases(if any).  The only problem I really have is parent teacher conference days.  My dd has that day off but DH has to work and I have to go to the meeting.  Luckily, it is a Friday so she is staying the weekend at my parents. 4951

I think it is ridiculous to have so many early release days.  There are many kids that go home to an empty house on those days.  It is clearly for the advantage of the staff without consideration for what is in the best interest of the children. I understand the reason for staff dev. and parent conferences but in the good old days the majority of that was done after school and during summer inservice.  Having early release means the district still gets paid for the entire day of school so really there is no incentive for them to not do as many as they can fit in. 4951

@soxs mom:

So, you think teachers should work longer than they already do? My husband gets to work an hour before school starts to tutor kids who don't show up half the time.

He does not get home until after 5 because of faculty meetings, calls to parents and planning. That's a ten to eleven hour day with no break.

There are also continuing education classes most teachers are required to do.

Yes, half days are stupid. They should get rid of those and do one day here or there.

His new district does this and I think it's smarter and more cost effective. 4951

I also think that if the district insists on half days, they should only be paid for half a day.   4951

@RogueHippEE: They do the half days so they get funds for a full day.  Like almost everything with Humble ISD, it's about the money.  No consideration for working parents.  Wednesdays are also the worst day for these half days too, busy meeting days for the corp world.  But they don't want to risk three day weekends on a half day Friday.I know it bugs a lot of people.  So makes sense for those staying in the district to get involved in school board elections and create a change in leadership.  The district totally sucks when it comes to many programs (compared to other areas I'm very familiar with) so I'm not even sure what they do with all the money their tactics generate.

@Odin:

Which is why I wrote I think if they insist on half days, parent's should push back and insist the school get paid for half a day. Humble ISD has more half days than any I have seen. NCISD had less than 5.

Elm Grove has an early release day scheduled for the day before Thanksgiving break starts. I guess the week off isn't enough. 4951

I did the admin work for our district before/after/summer care program, and finding childcare is so stressful for working parents.  It's so much easier when it isn't a half day here half day there.Our kids always got the whole week off at Thanksgiving and most districts didn't do that.  I really liked the way our district responded to parent's complaints.  It's a very small district, and the only way it got done was the superintendent left with short notice and a previous superintendent who is a old school guy, very admired for his service and awesome representative in the community stepped up.  Under his temporary tenure, he cleaned things up and listened to the parents.  It was so much simpler for everyone involved.  The state just needs them to get the right number of hours/days in.  We lived in a very snowy area and had 8ish snow days build into the schedule and sometimes needed more. Now, this did make working parents crazy, but you can't be too careful putting buses on the road with our kiddos on them.  And if they had to call the day early due to snow, it was a nightmare, you can't just send little ones home on the bus early not knowing if someone is there for them.  I hear you @RogueHippEE  teachers put in some serious hours and there are so many extra requirements that most people don't know about.  One of our Ds is in his last year of college, he's going to be a middle school history teacher.  Bless his heart, that is a hard age.  4951

@yankeejessica:

I agree. I don't get why they are one of, if not the only district
in the area to have so many.

I wonder if someone could start a petition a d take it to the next board meeting.

Our district now is smaller and poorer, they just finished a community meeting where board members and community leaders sat down and answered parent questions, etc.

I am not saying I am a fan of this District though b/c parents complained and got rid of homework, but even that shows if you want something changed, put in some legwork, complain to the right people, and get it done. 4951
