I don't think it's the police's business. This should be a program through your Dr's office or the health department.
I think the police insert themselves too much into a private citizen's life. It's not a crime to have meds prescribed to you.

This is only my opinion. 4951

@beadweaver: I think the reason the police are involved is that often times many drugs are controlled substances containing opiates and other addictive ingredients. It is a matter of public safety that they don't fall into the wrong hands and prescription drugs are under the control of the Feds. Since the Feds don't have local offices they ask law enforcement to get involved.I don't have a problem with it, I doubt it involves any law enforcement that are not already doing desk work so it isn't like they are taking them off patrols.

If you have prescription pills even in a pill case without a prescription label or paper police will and can take you in for that. Go to jail for being sick. 4951

@Chrisinkingwood:
The point I'm making is it shouldn't be the police, it should be the pharmaceutical industry. They dole em out, they should have a return policy.
I sometimes have to take a pain pill. If I need some, I have to pay 5 bucks for a triplicate prescription. One goes to DPS. They can demand my doc do a blood test. If my drugs are not in my system as prescribed or I have something else in my system they can arrest me. My doc knows I only take em as last resort even though she prescribes up to 4 a day but I'm lucky if I take 1/2 of four a week.
I am not committing a crime, they need to leave me alone.
I have taken pills to my doc and she has disposed of them. It was easy and fast.

I just open the bottle and dump unused or expired pills in the trash. No one in our family takes controlled substances so if someone wants to dig through my nasty trash for some expired cough meds or unused antibiotics they can have it. Hope I don't get caught by the pill police! 4951

I always save the cough meds with codeine, it's the only thing that works.  It's like gold to me.  I don't care if it isn't my Rx.We had a months worth of human growth hormone when my son's treatment was finished, unopened, worth $1500 - $1600, they told me to throw it away, seemed ridiculous.  I understand the precaution, but just seemed wrong.    4951

www.takebackyourmeds .org/what-you-can-do /medicine-disposal-m yths-and-factsI think they're doing this more for 'safe/proper disposal' (especially since it's at the Metro Park & Ride along with the weekend recycling).  Police gotta keep people out of the collection bin!  If you see someone holding a FREE VIAGRA sign, walk away!!  HahaHas anyone been before or volunteered... how's the turnout? 4951

@beadweaver: It is voluntary they are not going door to door.. I have no problem with it.. I would imagine if you returned them to the doctors office someone would scoop them up and sell them on the streets... many young people work in doctors office in many capacities....  Pharmacists likely don't want to be bothered.You are welcome to bring them to me I will dispose of them....   wicked giggle.......

If anyone has any Cannabis related Medications, Valium, or "goodie-goods" they are needing to get rid of, as a concerned member of the Community, I will be most happy to take these off of your hands and dispose of them in a most righteous manner......

@beadweaver: Hey BW... Big Pharmaceutical companies have offices all over the world, not here in Houston. The idea is that since many drugs are controlled by the Federal gov. and can be dangerous in the wrong hands (just like guns or explosives...) that police and sheriff stations be a safe place to take the unwanted stuff to. It isn't a federal mandate, just a plan to help folks get rid of old drugs that could be dangerous and you don't want them dumping them into the water/sewer supply system.I still have many drugs from my parents stint with Home Hospice, like Morphine and other very strong drugs. I could easily take them there with no questions asked or I could dump them in the Lake Houston... Which is better? Personally, I'm keeping them just in case.... Emoticon

@Chrisinkingwood
With the price of some stuff I can't imagine anyone just giving it away.

As one poster said 1500-1600 for one.
My old apartment manager got staph on top of copd etc. She nearly died. Still needed 26 days of meds and those 26 pills were $4500. With insurance that didn't want to pay. It was $6500 out of pocket.
Thank God her doctor fought with the insurance on her behalf.
I told her I would have died. We had no insurance at the time. We went for physicals and were in perfect health. Never went to the doctor and didn't see how spending 500 a month was nuts.

I feel really really blessed for my good health. When I here stories from my husband. He sells health etc and sometimes works hard to helps some people.

My position still stands. The health department, hospitals etc is a better fit. It's medical. 4951

@beadweaver: But you miss the point of LIABILITY. Legally hospitals and doctors and others don't want to get involved. So law enforcement is the best next thing. I appreciate your opinion and know it is sincere. We can agree to disagree and in a perfect world these left over drugs should not even exist.
