So last year I had a mammogram and it resulting in a biopsy on a tumor. It was benign. So I just went for my 6 month mammogram and ultrasound to be sure no more growths. I just got a phone call and the nurse says "The radiologist wanted to let you know that you have a mass which is probably cysts. Most likely Benign. She wants you to come back for another mammogram and ultrasound in 6 MONTHS to be sure no growth"... UM WTH!!! Why 6 months? If they just assume it's just cysts but aren't 100 sure that makes me nervous! Is it my insurance? When they were doing the ultrasound it literally HURT on the spot they are referring to. 4951

Don't wait. Go someplace for a second opinion.
In six months you may have waited too long. That's crazy.
Our insurance allows us to bypass the referral game. If I'm hurting I can go wherever I want or need.

Call you primary and have a good talk. I let mine know exactly what I expect and I adore her.

Please don't wait 6 months because someone thinks something. 4951

My understanding is, if it is a cyst an ultrasound should be able to tell definitively.  I think the best question to ask a doctor is, if this was you/ your wife what would you do?I had a lump very young that I let go for a few years while I was having babies.  Finally my sisters and mom pressured me to follow up.My doctor had told me to wait and watch.  But when I asked what she would do, she said she'd have it removed, "piece of breast for peace of mind", but as a doctor she couldn't say that.  Of course the surgeon wanted to remove it, lol.  They did an ultrasound right before surgery to make sure it wasn't a cyst.  What about the 3D mammogram, would that tell them more? 4951

Call them back and tell them you want another test now. Get a 2 nd opinion if you don't like what they are telling you. It's your body, take care of it by demanding answers now. It probably is benign but you need to know now for peace of mind. 4951

@MarT - they did a 3D mammogram on the spot where they removed the tumor last year. After they removed it last year they put in a metal placeholder (looks like a bow) to mark where it was. That is the area they focused on this time. I would hope by the ultrasound they could tell too but evidently not definitively! It was scary how she said "probably" about it being cysts and benign. Yesterday while having the ultrasound the technician asked me straight out "Have you felt these lumps?" and I said not before she pointed them out and they HURT while she had the thingy on that spot. She then asked me to hum.... I've never had to hum while getting the ultrasound before... I know she had reason and that scared me too! 4951

@MarT:
My doc is a bit younger than I. Her mom has some of my issues so she listens. She'll say my mom does this or that and that helps me not feel isolated in my issues or at least that she understands more due to her mom.
I used to try to fake being okay. She told me if I wake and can't move, just come in anytime, any issue and they will fit me in.
She has been pushing for a mammogram and with family history I should. It's been 15 years.
When I was younger my monthly would swell my breast glands to the point a t shirt was a weight. Since menopause that doesn't happen anymore but I still do a daily check in the shower.

Don't wait.

@BearfinFound this online:Softer portions of the breast vibrate more in response to the humming, while cancers and other firm masses vibrate less and thus become visible as areas of decreased color... 4951

@MarT - Awesome thank you for finding that! Good to know! Last year when they found the lump I didn't hum! :-)  So I was caught off guard this time.I am going to go for a second opinion. Breast cancer runs in my family and I'd rather have the piece of mind! I'm about ready to pull an Angelina and just get these puppies removed althogether! UGH! 4951

@Bearfin:

I just had my 6 month ultrasound done. There was minimal growth of the lump they found in March. I chose not to have a biopsy again because where it is located it would be invasive.

I am going to another dr in 6 months and if it has grown at all, will have a biopsy then.

I guess my point is, trust your gut. If you think something is wrong, get a 2nd opinion, most insurance companies will approve it.

Ok ladies. I couldn't let it go. I called my Dr. and said I wanted to discuss the results with her. The minute she walked in the room she said she was referring me to the breast specialist at the main clinic. They called me the next day and had me go in for consultation and then biopsy yesterday. I am in PAIN today but feel much better emotionally. Both the specialist and the radiologist say the 2 tumors (not even part of the cyst mass) were round and looked benign and the cysts were taken care of.  I will get official word next week but unoffically I am in good shape.Thank you for the advice ladies!!! 4951

@Fallon - I serioulsy just laughed! I can see the perky at 80! Breast Cancer runs in my family too but no where near as much as yours! That is scary history. This is the 3rd time that I've had to had the ultrasound after the mammogram and the 2nd time I'vd had to do the biopsy. I am so more relieved after the biopsy but wish crap would stop growing in there! lol  4951
