Not play tag.A school district in Washington state has taken a decisive step to protect the "emotional safety" of its children by banning them from playing tag. Mercer Island School District, located in the suburbs of Seattle, says a game of children running after one another is simply too dangerous to their fragile physical and emotional states, and needed to be eliminated.LINK 4951

Yeah, I never heard the news say, "the shooter blamed his elementary school friends for his anger because they always made him be "it" during tag." 4951

I feel so bad for kids today. They will never know the true meaning of childhood, what it's like to be free to explore, and never know how to get out of a jam.

Everything kids do today are structured activity. Constant stimulation and no time to be themselves.
Just being shaped and molded into what their parents want them to be.

They have play dates rather than venturing out to make friends.

Kids need to get dirty. Ya don't see dirty kids today. 4951

Can I play too. Like my mom.
Before paintball she would water down finger paints and either give every kid in the neighborhood a bucket and water pistol or she would fill balloons for a water fight. We would play tag with a painted hand too. Can't say no tag with a mark. She played tackle football, softball (all the parents cleared the field behind our hill and made us a baseball field.) In winter they spent most the night dumping water on that same hill so we could sled and ski down the hill, through the alley and if you were still on the sled around another corner. Every Saturday morning we would grab a bowl of cereal, make a pb&j or two and fishing poles, pellet guns , and berry buckets. We'd take off on foot or our bikes. Only rule was be home when the street lights came on. If she needed us sooner she either hollered at the edge of the woods or sent another kid to get us. We climbed trees, caught snakes, and once found the boys stash of playboy magazines. Lol
As we got older we would jump on our bikes for 20 mile rides, played miniature golf and went to the pizza and ice cream parlors. No adult supervision needed.

Lol@yankeeJessica! We have a few dirty ones over here too. Bead weaver I know what you mean. Kids should be free to play football and baseball in empty lots or parks. They don't always need to be In leagues. Just run , lay in grass and watch the clouds go by. Playing tag, dodge ball and eating cupcakes and drinking dr pepper. No tofu and flavored bottle waters. No league rules just neighborhood rules. Just being a kid and enjoying childhood. 4951

Geez, this is embarrassing, for any location.  That said, I'm not overly surprised given the area.  Mercer Island is a very well-to-do island located in the southern portion of Lake Washington, sandwiched in between downtown Seattle and another affluent area referred to as "The Eastside".  From the east shores of the island you can look over to areas like Medina and see many homes with float planes docked close by.  Bill Gates' residence is over there amongst them.  The folks on Mercer Is. often go to what some might consider extremes to protect their little snowflakes from the rest of the riff-raff outside the island.  It's a beautiful place, for sure, and I'm sure there are some very normal, well meaning people that live there.  Obviously though, there's some real loons too. 4951

We put the sprinkler on to water the grass but make it so it rainbows over the sidewalk and all the kids love to run their bikes thru it haha! The kids are constantly playing basketball or riding their bikes to the creek in our development to check out the bugs or whatever they can find. We have a friend who has 6 acres in tarkington and we let the kids have a good old time when we go over there. Hell the first time we went there was the first time I've seen lightening bugs since we moved to the south! I felt like a kid again running around trying to catch them!!

8 loved riding or walking to the corner store for a cupcake and dr. Pepper. Then when we finished we got out deposit from our bottle and that afforded us a twin pop to share and some candy.
Our schoolyards were wide open and it had a pool, a summer art program where we could learn to make baskets, pot holders, derby cars we got to race. The hoops were open for us to use. Some with supervision some without.
We were also known by everyone. We couldn't go in a 10 mile maybe 20 mile radius without someone that knew who we were sitting on their porch, driving etc. If we did something we got a rippin, then again when we got home cause they called your mom.
We had no boundaries yet knew our boundaries.

@sweetie: Very, very rare to see sandlot baseball or football being played anymore, especially in suburbia.

God we spent so much time in that sandlot. And on the coal mines. The silt piles is where we played king of the hill. Ya got filthy but it was fun in the summer to use a toboggan to slide down those hills.
We would scale the side of the rock cliffs so not to have to walk all they way around. No ropes just our fingers and toes. Who knew it would be this huge market. We never felt in danger. Although we did go thud at times we got back up.
