My sciatic nerve is on fire! Anyone else have this issue? If so, what is your best remedy? 4951

Oh God I don't miss those days. The only thing that got rI'd of mine was surgery.

Before then this is what helped...
Lots of stretching
A hot shower, and stretching in the shower
An obscene amount of ibuprofen
Resting

Don't mess around with this. If you are in pain constantly go get an MRI. My hub neglected and sucked up his pain for a month. It left him with drop foot.  4951

This is going to sound really weird, but might be worth a try since it's the only thing that worked for me...  After dealing with sciatica pain for several months, doing the stretching, ice, heat, hot baths, resting, etc. I decided one day to go for a run. I enjoy running and hadn't gone in months due to the pain and figured if I was going to be in pain I might as well be in pain doing something I enjoy since all the resting wasn't helping. I mostly jogged for 3 miles and when I finished my hamstring got tight - real tight, like could barely move it was so tight, (I know, just stick with me here) so I had no choice but to really stretch it out. By that evening, though, the hamstring loosened up and all of a sudden the sciatic pain was gone. If running is not an option maybe try some hamstring exercises like deadlifts or gardening to get that muscle tight. And like cgm stated, don't mess around with it for too long, you might have an underlying issue. My back is already fused at those levels so I knew it wasn't a disc issue. 4951

That pain is the horrible . I no longer keep my wallet in my back pocket thats what started it . The stretching helps most days but after being on my feet al day the evenings are the worst . I dont like to take pills but ibuprofen helps . And of course mary relaxes me so I can sleep .aA little herbal medicine helps. 4951

I'm sitting on a hot towel as we speak. I must have twisted in my sleep. Or I was tossing cause the dog left and went to the floor.

I also like a hot sock of rice. My dh will use it to roll out my back. He makes a ball of it and does circles up and down my spine. It at least takes the mind blowing burn away.

I've never liked pills or meds so this works for me.
I also have a big ball I stretch my back and arms on. It seems to help when I can stay balanced. Otherwise it's just comical and laughter is the best medicine.

Bio-freeze is like ben gay but doesn't stink and isn't super greasy. My chiropractor turned me on to it. It's about $14 a tube but goes a long way and worth it's weight in gold.

Ya gotta get up and stretch and move no matter how bad it hurts. Sitting although in a good position will exasperate the problem if you sit too long.
If you go the hot sock way, make sure to put a pillow under your knees to alleviate the pull on the lower back.

I've been on the hot towel for 15 minutes and I'm moving enough to make the bed and jump in the shower. 4951

Bead weaver, hope you get better soon. I'm glad I haven't gotten it much. My sister had it and she got massages for it and a shot in the back once. That relieved hers. 4951

@sweetie:

Thank you. Mine is from a bad wreck 20 years ago. I'd been poked and prodded to no end. In fact my right hand went dead and went through acupuncture but will always have a few slow nerves. Numbness in my hands and feet.
I know my limits, life doesn't allow for them so I choose. I know if I do it what the cost to me is and I plan accordingly.
This has been hurting for about a week and a half now. I've been moving and lifting what I know is gonna kill me. If I don't than my goal of rollin out in an Rv to work part time won't happen soon enough. I can rest when I'm dead.
I am my own worst enemy at times. Like lifting a dryer, pulling it out to only climb over the washer to squeeze behind the dryer to reattach the exhaust. My dh wanted me to call and have them do it. It was 11pm and I had a load in the washer. I don't wait, I do.
Thank you again. I'm moving slow but I'm up.
I actually slept to nearly nine. I haven't done that in 20 years. Anything over 4 my body stiffens and I wake with a migraine from hell. Not today, just a stiff ache. 4951

Acupuncture for temporary relief.  The only way I got rid of this ongoing issue was surgery. 4951

Might be worth getting checked out... I had that issue for about a month., for me it ended up being a tumor that had finally gotten large enough to press on it...  It was the size of a grapefruit had a removed a few years ago....    That nerve is both painful and annoying.... sleep was impossible...   Most likely it is nothing serious but if the stretching doesn't work have it looked at... 4951
