We pick different states every year.  We are thinking about SD this summer.  I want to see the fireworks over MT. Rushmore.  In general we go where the crowds don'tEmoticon This summer my dh took my oldest and they took a several state drive.  Best way to see our country, imo.   They hit up small town diners and drove off the beaten path.  They went thru 9 states.   My youngest still gets a bit car sick, so we generally fly on trips with him.If you could pick any state, I always tell people to go to VA.  Between Jamestown Settlement, Williamsburg, and the new Revolutionary War Museum they are building, it is a massive history lesson.  And Bush Gardens is the best theme park on earth.  Sorry Disney people, but it just is.  The food is amazing, and fresh, and the grounds are so clean it is unreal.  The shopping rocks, and the rides are great too.

@Fallon:

I may consult you the next vacation we take - KDC's travel agent Emoticon 4951

2 years ago we drove over 5000 miles in 17 days out to California and back. We saw many of the usual tourist stops, grand canyon, Hoover dam, Las Vegas, Lake Tahoe, Sequoia Nat Forest, Carlsbad caverns etc.. But we also saw the most beautiful scenery along the way. I-70 through the Rockies was amazing, the canyons of Utah were beautiful, and we ended up on the lonliest highway in America which took us through the great basin which was truly a sight to see (for miles we saw were people pulled over and spelled out their names in the salt with lava rocks). The kids complained about how boring it was to drive so long, yet still talk about all the stuff we saw while on the road. 4951

@Fallon: Mt. Rushmore is amazing! That part of the state is so beautiful that I cried when we had to come back to Phoenix.
