Ten mega corporations control the output of almost everything you buy; from household products to pet food to jeans.
According to this chart via Reddit, called
“The Illusion of Choice,” these corporations create a chain that begins
at one of 10 super companies. You’ve heard of the biggest names, but
it’s amazing to see what these giants own or influence.
(Note: The chart shows a mix of networks. Parent companies
may own, own shares of, or may simply partner with their branch
networks. For example, Coca-Cola does not own Monster, but distributes the
energy drink. Another note: We are not sure how up-to-date the chart
is. For example, it has not been updated to reflect P&G’s sale of Pringles to Kellogg’s in February.)
Here are just a few examples: Yum Brands owns KFC and Taco Bell. The
company was a spin-off of Pepsi. All Yum Brands restaurants sell only
Pepsi products because of a special partnership with the soda-maker.
$84 billion-company Proctor & Gamble — the largest advertiser
in the U.S. — is paired with a number of diverse brands that produce
everything from medicine to toothpaste to high-end fashion. All tallied,
P&G reportedly serves a whopping 4.8 billion people around the world through this network.
$200 billion-corporation Nestle — famous for chocolate, but which is the biggest food company in the world — owns nearly
8,000 different brands worldwide, and takes stake in or is partnered
with a swath of others. Included in this network is shampoo company
L’Oreal, baby food giant Gerber, clothing brand Diesel, and pet food
makers Purina and Friskies.
Unilever, of soap fame, reportedly serves 2 billion people around the world, controlling a network that produces everything from Q-tips to Skippy peanut butter.
And it’s not just the products you buy and consume, either. In recent
decades, the very news and information that you get has bundled
together: 90% of the media is now controlled by just six companies, down
from 50 in 1983, according to a Frugal Dad infographic from last year.

It surprises most people when I say oh I don't buy that.

If you look at my grocery receipt you would find
dairy
meat
veggies
fruits

All of those are grass fed, organically grown and hand chosen.

Besides owning all these umbrellas, they also make your store and generic foods.

We don't want cable
We don't want internet
We don't take a bunch of vitamins or prescription drugs
We don't burn our resources or shop til we drop just because it's the in thing.
Our names are not Jones nor Smith and we don't feel the need to keep up with the _________________.

@beadweaver:
If you don't want Internet, how are you posting on a web forum? I don't mean that in a rude way. I just don't understand.

@Mahm:
I did not take that as rude. Honestly I use a hot spot on my phone. I turn it on and off at will. I usually use free wifi and turn it on when I need to be more secure. It costs me half of internet fees and my unused time rolls over.
a day like today I can binge watch netflix with no worries.
I find the world to be full of greed and zombies chanting mine mine mine.

Dh won a fit bit. I told him, nope not poppin that in my phone. I don't need anyone to know or hack into my routines.
Smart tv is never coming in.
I'm an old fashioned girl at heart.

I couldn't care less and and happy for those 10 companies. I wish I were smart enough to start something that became so successful.

It doesn't bother me that I support their wealth by spending my money there. Why would it? While I'm at it, why would I care if their CEO is offered a $23M bonus check?

I always wondered why people go bat-crap crazy over some other companies bonuses or by how much a company makes.

Oh well, time for me to go support more corporations.

I owned Coca Cola stock for many years; they had a nice dividend but didn't appreciate much while I owned them.  I have Disney and P&G now so will certainly continue buying from them.  Think of how many people those companies employ!  Coke alone employs over 90,000 people. 4951

Stuart Mackenzie: Well, it's a well known fact, Sonny Jim, that there's a secret society of the five wealthiest people in the world, known as The Pentavirate, who run everything in the world, including the newspapers, and meet tri-annually at a secret country mansion in Colorado, known as The Meadows.Tony Giardino: So who's in this Pentavirate?Stuart Mackenzie: The Queen, The Vatican, The Gettys, The Rothschilds, *and* Colonel Sanders before he went ******* up. Oh, I hated the Colonel with is wee *beady* eyes, and that smug look on his face. "Oh, you're gonna buy my chicken! Ohhhhh!"Charlie Mackenzie: Dad, how can you hate "The Colonel"?Stuart Mackenzie: Because he puts an addictive chemical in his chicken that makes ya crave it fortnightly, smart*****! 4951
