just looking at rates....OMG WHAT?!?! I'd almost be better off hiring him a driver. Adding The Boy equals our soon-to-be old 6-month premium.

Its insane. Just make sure is gets on the 4 yr college program so he gets a good job and gets off the payroll. We had two -4 yrs apart- that was 10 long years. That way you get a raise when he is 21 or 22! 4951

The extra cost is to cover damages from all the stray shopping carts he might hit. 4951

When I started driving I was expected to pay for:My own car.My own cars maintenance. My own cars fuel.My own car insurance.Of course my father added me to the family policy, but I was responsible for my portion of it.I got a job and started on my 15th birthday because I wanted the privilege. 4951

I think I will create a web site that shows the location of all teenage drivers in their cars.  That way people can avoid those teenagers on the road. 4951

I still have all 3 of mine on our policy. I could support a small country on our premiums. 4951

We have always bought an inexpensive car put liability only on it, made the teen the driver on that car and take the risk. Still expensive, but it helps. We have 3 boys, girls are almost as bad though.

ETA: Sometimes if you have a high risk car it makes sense to put the child on his own policy when he's 18. Depends on the cars and the company. 4951

That was the same for me. My parents just didn't have the money, and they wanted to teach me to work for everything that nothing is for free. Even if they could afford it, pretty sure they still would have found a way to make me work for it one way or another lol. 4951

I had to get a job and pay for my own insurance policy...it was $3600/yr just for liability. Most of my money I got from working went to insurance, gas and fixing the car. I was mad at my parents at that time for making me pay for everything but I am grateful now because it helped me learn responsibility.

I will be teaching my son the same lesson. 4951

State Farm has the best rates I have found for TEEN drivers. They beat Allstate by almost 50%.  Costs us about $900/ 6 months, full coverage on a boy. 4951

My parents weren't rich, but they bought cars for us to drive, and paid for our gas and insurance. I didn't realize how good I had it! 4951
