Has any one ever been to Crater of Diamonds State Park in AK?  If so, what is worth the road trip?  Did you find any diamonds?  www.craterofdiamonds statepark.com/ 4951

We were just there this summer - didn't find anything either. It had been raining so everything had to be loaded into buckets, carried to the washing stations and sifted that way -the kids got tired of that real quick. I think if the ground had been dry and the kids could have sifted through sand they would have had more fun. I wouldn't drive 8 hrs just to go there but if you are in the area it's a neat place to spend a few hours.  4951

I was thinking of taking this trip too.  Thanks for posting this.   I've heard that there is a fun canoe trip in that area too. 4951

Actually, it was a great day with kids. It wasn't our destination, but it was worth the stop. We didn't find any diamonds, but we did find some terrific quartz crystals - on the order 8" long and 1" diameter- and quartz crystal clusters. Fall is good so it isn't that hot. Four hours, though, was all the kids could handle, but do a 2 hr shift, lunch, then a 2 hr shift. They still mention it as a positive experience and not one of Dad's natzi missions.  For example, they remember boardwalk hikes in the Everglades in the middle of summer as death marches. 4951

Heck yes they will! But nothing could be worse than the red bugs.  OMG, being attacked by a thousand mosquitos would be more fun.  Arkansas, has some of the cleanest camp grounds around.  Which is good because most of the hotels suck butt.  lol

@Fallon:   Glad you mentioned that.  I was thinking "hotel".   But now I'll make sure to bring camping gear.   FYI:    For anyone interested, there is a better cooler than Yeti that also costs less.  Bison Coolers.     Actually I think I'll start a thread about it.

Thanks for all the feed back!!!  We will go if we are in the area.  I wasn't sure if it was a specific destination to "see".   Need to find other stuff around to do as well :-) 4951

@AtascocitaTrails: We went this summer. I wouldn't go just for the diamond park. We were at another Arkansas state park and decided to go to the diamond as an excursion. First it's a large open field so make sure you have sun protection, they also have a small water park for the kids to cool off. We didn't find any diamonds and we spent about 4 hrs there, but the next week we heard that someone did find an 8 ct diamond. www.cnn.com/2015/06/ 27/us/8-52-carat-dia mond-arkansas/ The park has to certify any diamond before it can be sold to market. I talked to the park ranger and she said on average you have to go through about 40 buckets of material before you find a diamond. You do get to keep what you find, you can bring your own tools or rent from the park a large deposit is required but is returned when you are done. The Ranger also told me that they have a few regulars that are there everyday and that's the way they make a living.
