I am having 6 trees removed tomorrow from my property. 4 of them had a fungus and are dead/dying....the one huge pine if you remember was struck by lightning, and I am having the other large ones all cleaned up to the 35 foot level, and a HUGE crepe myrtle trimmed, and a large tallow trimmed. I received 14 cards for tree services on my door over the last couple of months. Lately I have had branches fall and I decided it was time to get this done. I have a set of spikes. I put them on, went up only 8 feet in a tree and decided I am too damn old to do this. It was hard enough to just do that much less take all these trees down. 20 years ago ............I would have done it. I have done many like this....but with age I guess comes wisdom, and I am sure hiring this out is cheaper than an emergency room visit.SOOOOOOOOO here is the deal. I got recommendations from some folks on this forum...Got all the bids in.2 rejected outright. No insurance.The spread for the SAME work among bids was a LOW of $1200  all the way up to $4200.ooThat is a HUGE difference. Anyway, I selected a contractor, verified via phone and an email verification his insurance was indeed in force and valid, and his crew of 6 (he is also the working owner) will be here in the morning. It will be an all day and part of Sat job as its a lot of work. SO the moral is.....get some quotes, more that just 3. Huge variation in price which I did not expect.Also, get a lein release/waiver signed for full payment. The type I has is legal in Texas and confirms he pays his employees. WIthout this, I would work with anyone. 4951

Wanted to add............Did check with HOA and sent them pictures. They said they would review and get back with me. FYI section 7, last paragraph of deed restrictions state CLEARLY you do NOT need approval from them to remove a DEAD tree from your property. Just to cover my ***, I sent them some pictures, informed them of my intent, and "they made a note in my file"So I am a go for the am..........Just FYI. 4951

Yes, same thing in SWH. If the tree's health is in question you must get an inspection from a certified arborist. I once had an argument with our HOA over removing a tree that had grown some big it was tearing up the driveway as well as pushing on the edge of the roof line for the covered walkway to the garage. They finally agreed I could take it down. 4951

I am so disappointed that I have to remove these trees in front of my home. One of the big pines got hit by lightning, and the other 3 died I believe as a result.. This one has a fungus and the bark is falling off. Its a red oak. It was alive and green last year. Its 30 inches acrossthis is the pine that got hit by lightning, It blew the bark off last year. Its now dead 100 percent.Below both sweetgums have this fungus all over the trunks The big one next to the house has lots of green suckers still growing but the main branches are all gone and this is whats on the bark almost all the way up. 4951

@Ray:

Yuck! That green stuff is gross! I know in Ike we lost about 6 trees. They were huge. Luckily we have many more but it's sad to see them cut down knowing they are old. 4951

@Ray - if it were me, and the tree crew was coming out, and there was a Chinese Tallow on my property, I would tell them to cut that sucker to the ground and grind the stump down as far as they could.  They are the scourge of the earth. 4951

If you are happy with the job, please pass on their contact information as we need to have some trees taken out also.   4951

I hope you're using T-n-T Tree Services. I posted about him a month or so ago. 4951
