Honest question guys, and please no bantering back and forth. I'm looking for genuine answers.  Emoticon What does each religion stand for? By that, I mean the values, preaching's, etc... Just wondering why there is one Book and so many variations. Please enlighten me, as I'm serious about this. The reason I'm asking is because one of the questions the phone surveyor guy asked was, "What religion are you? How many times do you attend church?" 4951

The Bible explains that Jesus doesn't like religion..It separates His children. I call myself a Christian but attend a Baptist church..I do not call myself a Baptist..I just call myself a Christian/follower of Christ. The only way to Heaven is accepting Jesus Christ. 4951

@ProblemAgain: No. He was busy trying to keep a straight tone, while I was distracting him with unrelated and off topic remarks.

@Brat: each one? This thread will be longer than the shopping carry thread if we list each one

@mm4731: If possible? I'm genuinely being serious on this question since I have no idea what each stands for.

@ProblemAgain: NO POLITICAL REFERENCES! The survey guy asked me that, and I replied with, "Picture me being an Ostrich and putting my head in the ground. No comment."

@Brat: Within Christianity, there are catholic branches and Protestant branches. Within Protestant, there are many denominations. Like Ashley, I attend a Baptist church. I have always understood the premise of this denomination is Grace. We are saved by grace through faith, and not by works. Baptists do not believe you can lose your salvation if you are truly saved. Saved is defined as confessing that you are a sinner, that the wages of sin is death, and that a perfect Christ took our place and died on the cross for our sins. All we must do is accept his free gift of salvation. At that point, the holy spirit lives inside us and our demeanor and outlook changes.

All Protestant religions believe some variation of this, however some interpret the scriptures to say you can lose your salvation, or you must be baptized, or you must speak in tongues. I can't readily tell you which is which. I was told many years ago that the way a banker tells a counterfeit bill is by studying the true dollar. If you study the bible and know what you believe, it isn't necessary to study and know what all the various religions believe. 4951

@Brat: you mean denomination, not religion. Christianity is a religion, Catholics, Baptists, Lutherans, Anglican, etc are denominations. Judaism, Islam, Buddhism are different religions but since you mentioned one book, I am assuming you are referring to the differences in Christian denominations. It all started as one and with time different interests and interpretations of the bible has led to fractions and new Chriatian groups forming. The one commonality is that all Christians believe that Christ is the son of God and died for us.

@Brat:   I've been reading about the different religions for over 30 years and still can't answer your question.  Before the first Iraq war, people in America specified themselves as Baptist, Catholic, Methodist, Lutheran, Presbyterian, etc etc.  Most now consolidate these sects and just call themselves Christian, even though some have major differences. When you look globally, there are Christians, Muslims, Buddhists, Hindus, Jews, Sihks, etc etc and most of them have different sects. If I have to define myself, I am an Agnostic that believes in leading a good, honest, moral, caring life.

@Mahm: Ok. But there are many "branches" and their beliefs. That is the part I don't understand. Every branch says this and says that. This is where I'm confused.

@notfromhere: Yes, true. Thank you for clarifying. My intention was denomination. Sorry! This is the point that I'm trying to clarify. I completely agree with you on your last statement.  4951

@Brat: it was not meant as a political reference. it was meant as the type of personality..remember i said being kind to others, treating others with respect, and living with humility
