Okay I admit, I have gone maybe once as a kid, on private property and I know ZERO about fishing, but a girl in my office was telling us about an overnight fishing trip she was on last weekend, somewhere in or near Matagorda or some place like that.  I don't remember exactly...that's not the point. Are there seriously rules for the size, number and weight of fish you can catch?  She said the game wardens are there to check what you catch and make you throw back certain ones for size, etc.?  Really?  It's an '****** fish...who cares who catches what and how many, and how big, etc.?  Well, I admit, not catching baby fish does make sense, but still, in the middle of the night you actually have to worry about stuff like that? 4951

Well, fish and game laws have been around for over a century. With out them people would just take them all. The laws are for the most part based on scientific studies of how species are doing or how much they might be being over fished or hunted.  And a percentage of the costs of gear, licenses goes back into conservation. That's what the fish and game stamps you must also buy are for. 4951

@Chrisinkingwood:   I seriously had no idea.  Just didn't realize there was a fish shortage or that poles were worth that much.  Take my pole, fine, I'll just go get another one...not like there's a shortage of those either.

I'm guessing you don't know how much you can spend on rod and reels...fishing costs as much, if not more than hunting if you throw in the cost of the boat. 4951

Yes they have limits and some you get tag stamps for. You get your limit and your stamp is punched. It's management and they are very serious about it.
Size matters as some places get stocked.
It's a serious issue too. As someone said they will take your poles and you can go to jail.
You don't need a license in a state park, you can rent poles too.

@BooBear: Not a clue.  Just thought they were poles and string.  @beadweaver:  She was talking about fishing off a pier, so I was thinking similar to the piers in Galveston, not a park like Deusen or anything like that.  Said they were throwing out catfish because of weight, etc.  Why would you throw out a fish that is already half dead or already dead?

@donnatella:
When I threw my first husband out in 1979 I was smart enough to keep the rods and reels I bought.

When I was a dancer and dating a volunteer fireman he got laid off, we had a bed and set up in our van, nothing nicer than waking on the side of the lake to hot coffee, walking to the edge of the lake and tossing in a pole or two. Yes your allowed two.
Night fishing with a small fire and the sound plop plops of jumping fish and the nocturnal life we hide from. The moon and the stars.
We always keep ours in a bucket alive as long as possible. The fresher the better. Or they are gutted and fried up. We pack them in ice on the way home.

Next time your out swing by the fishing section. You'll see why you see people get so upset over a pole or string. I used to get so mad when my guy would loose his lure. He'd always say, let me borrow yours. Um no you just lost yours.
A few yrs back I outfitted my dh for Easter. I used a tackle box for a basket. My mil wanted to share the gift. When the lady rang it up and it came to $200. For basic things my mil nearly fainted. She said I was gonna give you a 20. I let her and still put her name on the gift. She too had no idea what a basic set up was.
I would much rather my husband go fishing then most of what's out there to do.
Btw you have to have separate licensing for fresh water and salt water. Yes they will catch you.
