Anytime a LEO dies in the line of duty it is not only a loss for the community but absolutely tragic for the individuals family. Over the last few days there has been a lot of senseless heated rhetoric, along with people saying such things as this is the worse it has ever been. Below I have posted official statistics from the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial. You will note within the stats the deadliest year for officer fatalities was in 1930 at 301. Other years you will see that officer deaths were in the low to high 200s. The last year recorded is 2014 where officer deaths stood at 117. Most likely the reason some people feel things are worse now is because we know more now thanks to 24 hour news and instant communication. Further most likely within these tragedies the families were not contacted by high federal government officials expressing their condolences, nor did they expect it. In all likelihood the families were enveloped in affection by the community where the officer served as it should be. I didn't put this up to debate anyone. Rather I posted it to perhaps, just perhaps bring some levity. BTW CNN is doing a series of specials on the 1970s. When it comes to domestic turmoil, I think things were possibly worse then than they are now. www.nleomf.org/facts /officer-fatalities- data/year.html 4951

Maybe if the 24 hour news did not make heros out of thugs that openly say to kill pigs or fry them like bacon people would not think this.  CNN is also to blame for a lot of friction with cops and race because everytime something comes up they shoot first and ask questions later.  I have seen them talk for days around the clock on the same story based on speculation.  This is a great news outlet for people looking for a reason to hate. 4951

Where the heck were the gun control people in the '30's ??? In fact, goung out on a limb here, but these stats suggest police officers are safer NOW with so many illegal guns on the streets? Even before mandatory background checks.

To make a true comparison you need more information than just a year and number. This is only a convenient partial list of "facts". Nothing substantial.

I only bring up gun control because that is already the conversation that is coming out if all of this. 4951

@BooBear: the National Firearms Act was enacted in June of 1934 because of the deaths of law enforcement officers. tho some still declare it unconstitutional (tho the supreme court declared otherwise), the act added taxes and registration to guns and also barred some types of firearms from the normal private possession of citizens

@BooBearIf you research within the site it will break down how some of the deaths occurred.  For example through gunfire, car accidents, etc. 4951

Is this guy joking? With whats going on in the country and our own backyard you decide to bring up some bs like this?

Do us and your community a favor and shut up

@mm4731:  In keeping with my pledge I will not debate this.  The purpose for which I posted this information is the current situation we're in now with the tragic loss of this deputy cannot be attributed to a black problem, white problem, Hispanic problem, etc.  It is a societal problem and has been for a number of years long before BLM came along.  I have friends and former associates that discuss these issues quite a bit.  And we were having these conversations before President Obama and Eric Holder.  Being a LEO is a tough job and the problems LEOs face do not lend themselves to simple solutions or attempting to blame one group for all the issues.  In order to maintain an orderly society it is going to take all the law abiding citizens to pull together, whatever color they might be, whatever political party they might be a member of, whatever God they might serve.  I've been there.*Edit*Stay safe and God bless you all.

Comparing LE Deaths (especially from shootings) of 40 years ago and earlier and today is comparing apples and oranges.   Factors that reduce deaths from shootings:*police actually have better training today than in the '30s. training that keeps them out of volatile situations and training that allows them to handle volatile situations better if they get in them*police have body armor (bullet proof vests) that save hundreds of lives a year. Body armor became widespread in the late 60's and that body armor was very primitive*medical care is much better  today than it was in previous years. many officers, and citizens, have wounds that only a few years ago would have rendered them dead that are routinely treated today*swiftness with which a victim can get to a Level 1 Trauma Center today saves lives, as well. (more hospitals, faster ambulances, Life Flight type air transports, etc.)*technology, such as police radios and cell phones, has made the summoning of medical aid almost instantaneous. Previously, a person would either have to go to a callbox or a payphone to summon help. Most large agencies also now have GPS equipped radios that can summon help and disclose the officer's location with just the push of a button (with the officer having to say anything) 4951

@chilladahunIn honor of @mm4731 I will make one last point and that is it's not about body armor, more advanced medical care, or bullet resistant vest.  It's about our violent society and attitudes some in our society have toward authority in general and law enforcement in particular.  LEOs has faced various dangers over generations not only from criminal organizations such as right wing paramilitary groups, the mafia, and drug cartels.  But obviously individuals like rapist, robbers, murderers, etc.  However what has made this profession even tougher in the last couple of decades is a break down of society in regards to respect for authority.  For example when I was young there was no need to have a campus police force.  And very rarely did you hear of a parent having to call the police because they had a child in the house threatening to do them harm. Children grow to be adults.  If they were comfortable disrespecting their teachers and parents, many of them are not going to respect a LEO either.  Certainly there's so much more.  However it does illustrate that the root cause of why we see the events that are unfolding now go far deeper than the news media or some politicians will have us believe..  4951

This may not be popular but I have a few questions.
1. What is it with all the fundraising?
Am I wrong to assume they have benefits and
life insurance? With double indemnity if on the
job and something happens?

2. If the 100 club is helping the family with expenses, I'm confused as to is this a one time payment or do they continue to help the family?

3. I would like to know the real stats,
# of people murdered by other people
# of people killed by police
# of police killed in the line of duty
# of police ambushed like this officer
4. When are the citizen going to get **** off enough and insist that things get cleaned up?
Gangs have been allowed to grow and breed to outrageous numbers. Courts are turn styles and money makers for everyone but the victims of the actual crime.
5. What's your idea of a solution to a more peaceful world?
