A mother of four is at the center of a blistering social media movement dubbed hashtag #IStandWithCherish.

Cherish Peterson is under fire for leaving behind her 2-month-old son,
Huxton, outside an Arizona supermarket Aug. 24. A photo snapped by a
bystander shows the baby strapped into a carrier inside a shopping cart.

In an interview with station KPHO-TV in Phoenix, Peterson shares her side of the story.

“I got into my car and normally I put my cart away, but I didn’t need to
because I parked at the front of the store and I never park there, and I
drove away,” Peterson, of Gilbert, Arizona, told the affiliate.

She describes the horrific moment she realized baby Huxton was not in the car when she got home 40 minutes later.

“As I was pulling into the garage, my 3-year-old goes, ‘Where’s baby
Huxton?’” she explained. “His car seat is right behind me so I turned
around and realized it was gone.”

An off-duty Phoenix police officer had spotted the infant and took him
inside a nearby salon. Huxton was not injured, but Peterson now faces a
misdemeanor count of child endangerment.

“I thought the whole time he was in my car,” the mother, now 28, said.

The incident has sparked a social media firestorm with many quick to
condemn Peterson’s actions. One Facebook user wondering whether she was
“under [the] influence?” But just as fiercely, others rushing to support
Peterson on Twitter and a Facebook page attracting nearly 17,000 members.

Supporters are sharing what they’re describing as their own “perfectly imperfect” parenting moments and calling for forgiveness.

“I have never met Cherish but the public punishment through social media
has to be far more painful than any charges that might be brought
against her. I forgive and so should we,” one user wrote on the page.

Her husband, Nathan, is also springing to her defense.

“We love our family and we love our children,” he said. “I married the
best, in terms of the mother and wife Cherish is to me and our
children.”

The Petersons admit they’re not perfect parents and they’ve learned this the hard way.

“I’m a good mom who made a horrible mistake,” she said, fighting back tears. 4951

I think the scare was punishment enough, cut her some slack. Sure it could have been worse but she made a mistake as we all have. Having four little kids is more than enough to deal with on a day to day basis, I know for a fact I'd be crazy as a bat if I had four and all under the age of 10. At the least I would say have her take some parenting and time management classes. But to fine or jail her is ridiculous, its not like she neglected the child (kids). 4951

Most likely the authorities will look into it and if there is a history of issues with the kids, they may go forward with punishment, if there has been no issues she will likely get off easy or just a warning.   4951

I don't know.  I left my purse in the shopping cart three times in one year, very stressful year.  I can't imagine leaving a baby though. We did leave our child on the playground at church one Sunday.  Hubby thought I had him, I thought he did, we came in separate cars.  We called the church and went right back, about 10 minutes, Ds never even knew we left.  He was probably 7 or 8. I had four kids 9 and under, I was scared to be alone with them at first, lol.  But when ever I needed perspective, I thought of my mom she had six under 9, was pregnant and had two more after that.  4951

@bubbleyes72: I agree.  My kid screamed so much in the car, there was no way I wouldn't notice her missing, but, I only had 1 not 4.

I've left my purse before, but a baby? I wouldn't go on line to shame her, but I have to wonder what's wrong with her! 4951

@MarT: WOW, myself and one other cousin in my family are the only ones who have one child. All the others have at least two to four. I don't know if I could handle more than two. When I would babysit for others while my son was still young it would drive me nuts, and I would make sure that I never ran errands with them either. I guess it can be done, my mother had three of us and my grandmother had ten! I also have two Aunts that had sets of twins and kids before the twins. Both cried when they found out they were having twins, they tell that story numerous times when the discussion comes up. And yes, I had to baby sit them too, I was in high school then. When I was a baby, my parents were only 19 years old. They had just bought a new boat and were taking it to the lake for the first time. In all their excitement, they left me behind at home.I never really got over that. 4951

Thankfully, my oldest is a very responsible girl.  She was grown up since she was 2, so she honestly was a big help.  But the 3 youngest are boys, #2 was very naughty from day one and #3 & #4 were 17 months apart.  4951

They are all adults, two in college 20 & 21, the older two are 26 and 29.  None of them are married or have children.  Hubby is so sad, he says we're never gonna get grandkids.  I just told him last night that I want a baby, lol.  I just love newborn babies.  Do hospitals let volunteers come and rock the babies anymore? 4951
