So last week I was talking with my niece about stopping by to see the kids and she said they were out, but would be home soon after she had stopped at Kroger up front. Told here about the credit card fraud going on at Kroger & not to shop there, but she did.

Today they were notified by the credit card company (not a bank check/debit card) that someone had charged $5K & the cc company had locked down the account. She can't even get logged in to see the details yet and is understandably upset.

Don't shop there if you don't have cash money in hand! 4951

I shopped there on Saturday and had no issue.  I always use the self check-out.  Wonder if that makes a difference?Unfortunate, however if the card has never left her possession then she is not responsible for any of the charges.  You should be a little happy that the back caught the unauthorized charges. 4951

@angiekaye:

If you punch your pin, it's a matter of time. The have things that read infra red and heat from your fingerprint. We have started using only cash.
Anywhere

Now watch your receipts. I've also heard they are adding 1 dollar to your charges. At the end of the day they turn in what they should have and pocket a couple hundred.

Problems come because they are always one step ahead. 4951

My bank has told me it is harder to get your money back if the card is a debit card.  I believe (I could be wrong) that debit cards are not covered under the Fair Credit Reporting Act however fraudulent charges on credit cards are IF the card has not been out of your possession, lost/stolen and not reported.  I learned all this a year or so ago when a Sirius employee used my credit card number I paid my account with to purchase herself a new computer.

That's one of the reason that I use credit over debit cards, besides the points.  Also, if your debit card has fraudulent charges, that is cash out which means you have to wait to get your cash back, you are not out anything on the credit card while you wait for the charge to be reversed.  On a debit card you have to be much more vigilant in monitoring your balances, your liability for unauthorized charges depends on how quickly you notify your bank. 4951

I do not use my credit cards at any Kroger or their gas stations. Every time I do, I end up having fraudulent charges! 4951

A few months ago we were at Disney World. while walking in EPCOTT on the sidewalk I get a text that my bank had been over drafted. This was an account I don't use and I keep a minimal balance in. I had used the card twice that trip, but not that day.Someone had got the number and made a $90 purchase on Disney.com. I guess they assumed it would be one of hundreds of Disney purchases and I wouldn't notice. Luckily they got the wrong card number!Anyways the bank straightened it all out. Glad it wasn't my primary...it would have been tough to not have access to that for a few  days. 4951

@beadweaver: I watch our accounts like a hawk.  I have noticed the addition of $1.00 sometimes and automatically call the bank.  My husband thinks it is sill that I call over $1.00 but you never know if they are testing you.  I am afraid if I don't call, the $1.00 will turn into $100 next time.

@RogueHippEEI've heard that they often test a card with a small amount, if it works they go for the big purchase.  I had someone try and buy a fur coat with my CC.  I've had to replace mine at least three times.  Our United Mileage card was just replaced with a Pin & Chip card, I hope that helps.  It gets to be a pain.  4951

@MarT: No pin and I just got the one with the chip.  Can you turn a pin number on?

Good question, I thought the pin part referenced some sort of number authentication that changed with each use, but made cloned cards not work in machines. 4951
