Obama admin announces he is going to change the name of Mt. McKinley to Danali. This is to pay homage to the native Indians in Alaska. He will do this while in Alaska to
promote climate change initiatives. Alaska repubs said he picked now instead of winter because this is the time of year that some melting has occurred . They ask don't want the name change as this was named after Pres McKinley as a tribute. I guess textbooks will now have to be rewritten to show the name change. 4951

This nonsense needs to stop. Stop right now.

It really angers me to see our history being ripped apart, statues being taken down, and all this divide.

Why are a few getting away with all of this. They are doing so much more harm than good. The lessons being taught are just make enough noise, destroy enough property, break all the laws you want and make sure to throw in threats of riots and just maybe the president will say something, they will televise your funeral and name a street after you.

glad I'm old but fear the world my son and grandchild will be thrown into is going to be an unrecognizable one. 4951

the White House announced on Sunday that it is changing the name of Mt.
McKinley, the tallest mountain in North America. Denali, which is what
the indigenous people of Alaska were calling it before a random gold
prospector named it after President William McKinley in 1896. Since
then, a long-running but somewhat obscure battle has raged between
politicians in Alaska, who wanted the original name back, and people in
McKinley’s home state of Ohio, who were quite happy with the way things
were. 4951

This is more important than saying a few words about a police officer being shot in the back of the head by a cold-blooded coward. Houston's useless Mayor has been unsurprisingly absent as well. I guess she's too busy making sure men & women get to share the same bathroom. 4951

@djohn78: read the news...he is doing what the people of alaska have wanted since 1975. in fact they began trying to rename it when they were admitted to statehood. sounds like the right thing to do and allowing local wishes to prevail is a good thing right?

I am very confused. Alaskans were calling the mountain Denali when I lived there 10 years ago. I thought it had already been officially changed. It is in Denali National Park, just outside the town of Denali. No one who lives there calls it Mt. McKinley.

I don't like a lot of what this president does, but this is really not a big deal. It's more of a formality. 4951

the decision to rename Mount McKinley faced a backlash from
Ohio politicians protective a native son from the state, former
President William McKinley. so it seems pretty simple: just rename some mountain or hill in OHIO to honor McKinley 4951

Ok, I think this is of not being able to please everyone. The state of Alaska and most Alaskans have called it Denali for many years, it was only the Federal government, especially the Interior Dept that still calls it Mt. McKinley. Both Alaskan Senators and the Governor who are all Republicans applaud the change and have thanked the President. On the other hand, Ohio politicians are upset since President McKinley was from there.  The mountain got the name Mt. McKinley from a gold prospector who was happy that President McKinley changed our currency to be based on the gold standard. It wasn't anything as noble as naming the mountain for him because he died in office or helped do something for Alaska. This has nothing to do with political correctness, pleasing Native Americans, or is it a move against  the GOP or anything else. McKinley was our 25th President and was considered pretty popular. He came between Grover Cleveland and Teddy Roosevelt and up until JFK he was our last assassinated President. And we are talking about a President who was in office 114 years ago. 4951
