Our house came with appliances but I'm not sure I like them. Iv debated on replacing them but I can't stand to replace 3 month old appliances that still have a 3 year warranty on them with new appliances that probably only have a year warranty. The Electrolux guy has already been out 4 times to fix the fridge (leaky ice dispenser leaving water marks down the door, leaky ice dispenser again, rusted doors and leaky ice dispenser again) but the nice part is I don't have to pay for it. I think they finally fixed it correctly since it was a recall. I guess my questions are, how the heck do you keep finger prints off stainless appliances. It seems like I don't even touch them and they appear. If I do replace them is all stainless steel, regardless of brand, just as hard to keep clean or just these since they are builder grade? And does anyone have the black stainless or slate appliances and how do you like them?

Iv never owned a house before nor had stainless appliances so this is all new to me. 4951

They make smudge proof stainless appliances. They are on the option/upgrade list for the builders that include appliances. Either way, you have to either invest in them, or keep wiping the smudges. We are adding them to the new place. 4951

They didn't have an option to upgrade the appliances. Only the washer and dryer. I thought I had seen smudge prof stainless before but our last few trips to Lowes/Home Depot/Best Buy we didn't see the option. I love how they look in our kitchen. I'm afraid black stainless would be too dark but I hate the finger prints. I remember when I was a kids my mom would clean the sink and coat it with baby oil. Has anyone done this? Would it hurt the finish? 4951

They are at the top end of the options and aren't cheap. Even if it adds to the price of the house by a bit, we are stil getting them so we can avoid the delivery and installation charges. They will be in and ready when we move in.

If you don't have smudge proof and no other reason to replace, just be careful about touching except for the handles. It costs nothing to do that or to wipe them down during your regular cleaning. 4951

@cgm10sne1: Just an upgrade. Staying in the area. Hoping to move by year end. Torn between 3 new builds that are in progress now.

@Nicole4647Smudge-proof stainless is awesome, and yes more pricey. I miss having that where I used to live. In your case, I would say to just suck it up and save your money so that you can get what you want when the warranty runs out on those appliances. . Where I used to live, we bought an awesome 2-door, smudge-proof stainless fridge from Sears' "Scratch and Dent" store off Rigsby. There were two 2" dents on each panel, and a 3" dent on the visible side. We saved hundreds on this fridge because of it. We corrected the problem by placing magnets or pictures over the dents and the fridge looked awesome. Just an FYI when you go to look in the future. Emoticon 4951

@Nicole4647:
Congratulations! May you find much joy making your new house a loving home.

I'd personally suck it up. Our Amana ice maker gave us an issue when we bought it. They fixed it and it lasted us 9 years before it got a little noisy. I insisted on putting it in the garage while we shopped. We kept looking and with no annoying noise to nag us it lasted another two years.
it needed a freon boost or new cooler motor. I'd sold my house and put free on it. The Atascocita swim coach drove by and asked for it. He was gonna buy the part and fix it for the kids had cold drinks. He took a large leather couch and loveseat too for the kids. That was 5 yrs almost 6.
I'd wait til my family grew and need arose. Bank the money and in the meantime before big purchases make a pro and con list. It helped us big.

A simple solution - hang a kitchen towel on the handle. Hold it when opening/closing the door. 4951

@nicole4647I use Weiman Stainless Steel cleaner & polish (around $6 at wal mart) and it does a great job cleaning my appliances. My biggest fingerprint and water drip problems are the fridge and dishwasher.  I rarely have to clean the oven or microwave and the cooktop gets cleaned almost every night (apparently I am a messy cook) but not because it's stainless.We had a Kenmore Satin Finish fridge and I loved the satin finish as it never had fingerprints - I did not love the fridge (it was too small and it would viciously throw ice out from the dispenser onto the floor so the floor was always a mess) so it's new home is now the garage. Maybe you could just replace your fridge with the satin finish for now since that is usually the appliance that ends up with the most fingerprints.  4951
