We've lived here just over one year and have already noticed an increase in air traffic!

A huge United plane cruised over my backyard before 8 am this morning (Sunday). It was so low that the passengers could probably see the "WTH?!" expression on my face.

We bought in Kingwood because we were told that planes flew south (FM 1960) and north (Northpark).
Is that true? 4951

No- they regularly fly over Kingwood in a landing pattern. On rare occasions they will take off in this direction. I've lived in Sand Creek for 13 years and not noticed an increas as of late. Same as it's always been. We sit outside and watch our birds and the planes- some get low but not bad. Air traffic is heavier over 1960 and Atascocita. 4951

They changed the air traffic flow just months ago. I personally love to watch the planes come and go.  My profile pic was taken while sitting in my front yard.  The flag hangs from our house.  The actual pic taken with my cell phone is turned.  Anyone who has seen pics I post here knows I can't flip them!  I am tech-challenged.   4951

It has increased a lot in the last two years. I notice that you get 4-5 rapid fire and then it goes quiet a while. The other day that double decker plane (A380?) waddled over, not overly noisy but threw a very large shadow.
You can file a noise complaint online if you want. Won't do much good but you'll feel better. 4951

"Flight patterns" don't "change."  Planes land and take off into the wind. Runways are situated to be aligned with the prevailing winds. Instrument Landing Systems are aligned with the runways.  Therefore, for the most part, planes take off and land in the same direction (or pattern, if you want to call it that). On rare occasions, the winds shift enough for the planes to land to a different runway. With regards to the noise, there are many factors that affect the noise. Air density, air temperature, humidity, wind direction, etc. all affect the noise and how far and which direction it travels. 4951

Well a lot will depend on wind direction for the approach for landing.  My kids live in the south end of Kingwood in Atascocita between Upper Lake and 1960 and get a great deal of regular traffic. You also will notice higher flying planes heading east over us as they make a 180 over Lake Houston and head west for landing. The really big jets like the A380-800 double decker and the 747s usually use the south runway for landing and when they take off they usually fly NE along the 59 corridor. 4951

I personally love to watch the jets come in and try not to be distracted as I drive along 59 and have a 757 or A380 come in very low for it's approach to the landing. It's truly amazing how those things stay aloft and how many miles they cover!  My wife and I have done a few trips from LA to Sydney, now that is a long flight. Thank goodness we were in Business Class! 4951

@chilladahun:

The final approaches remain the same but they have been short-cutting across KW a lot more. Probably to get to the north runway. Planes from the north and west used to loop out over Huffman to get in line and and then approach across the lake. The guy that responded to one of my complaints said they changed the glide patterns which allowed them to come in a bit differently - tighter turn. 4951

We have planes come over just north of us constantly. We are right were the planes slow their speed and often hear them reduce engine power. I think it's kinda neat to listen to. Every so often one comes right over the house very low. Scared me at first but now I'm use to it.

I love seeing those huge jets slowly lumbering through the sky at takeoff. It just amazes me something that big can even fly.

We also live close to the the train tracks and in the winter can hear the train coming from miles away. But I also don't mind hearing the train horn. 4951

The noise is almost nonexistent.

The ocassional low flying plane that does create noise isn't a big deal. It is all part of living in a metro area. Could be a lot worse! 4951

The flight patterns DID change. I was a fan of the old ones. Those big boys came right over my house. I could sit and watch them all day. 4951

@SenseOfHumor: you can have them back....though we mostly get the small commuter jets.
