So my neighbor got back from Louisiana after being gone a week. I was watching his dogs, and feeding the chickens. Shhhhhhhhhhhh yes here in Fosters Mill. Who cares....they are just birds that give you eggs daily..Anyway he knocks on the door since he is back and brought me a box of Pork Meat Pies, one humoungous bag of hog cracklins, and some boudain stuffed Pork chops. Last night we had the meat pies. Never had those before, they were pretty good. I am gonna look up some recipes and try to make some of my own, I have NEVER had a meat pie before.... even the sound of that seems weird to me. Kinda like a hamburger milk shake... Emoticon 4951

My favorite meat pies are the Caribbean kind. Anani’s Caribbean Creations had some really good ones, but I understand they have closed down Emoticon 4951

Having grown up in Scotland, meat pies taste like childhood to me, I absolutely love them.Not the same as from LA, but a trip to Veron's is now in order.

@Ray
I make meat pies all the time and it's so easy. Just use a basic pie crust recipe and fill with a meat mix. 2 of my favorite mixes are:
ground beef, cream of whatever soup, peas, carrots and diced potatoes - like a Shepard meat pie.

The other is rice, boudin, diced chicken and crawfish or shrimp, Creole seasoning and a small block of Velveeta all mixed together.

My biggest issue is making sure the meat mix is not so runny that it just flows out of the crust, but not too dry either. 4951

I've never had them, but the first one looks like an empanada, which is very yummy. 4951

I don't think Veron's carries LA meat pies, unless it's a new thing. The crawfish pies they carry are more like a pot pie (that you eat with a fork) vs. a hand pie (large empanada) like Ray is describing.

Natchitoches, LA is famous for their meat pies! You can even get them at most gas stations there. Emoticon 4951

@brightlights:  Agreed.  Meat pies were not commomn in south LA, and I had my first at a friend's grandmother's house in Cloutierville (sp?) South of Natchitoches.  Many years later, when we lived in LaPlace, LA, my wife found a little shop that made them.  Delicious, but high in carbs and fat.

@brightlights:  Yes, my mother was from NE Texas (Hughes Springs, Daingerfield, etc) and whenever we went to her parents for Christmas, we always timed it so that we would drive Hwy-1 through Natchitoches at night to see the Christmas lights along the river.  I-49 came MUCH later.

Slightly off topic, can anyone recommend a local place that makes good/great empanadas? Appetizer portions/sizes are fine. I just haven't found any that aren't chicken (looking for beef). Seems to be the best I've had so far are from caterers serving them at events. I was hoping a local restaurant would have them on the menu somewhere. 4951

Man, back in the 80's we used to go to this Empanada place off Richmond (when i worked and lived on the SW side of town) and they were freak'n awesome.Had about 25 different ones (give or take), of which about 10 were dessert ones.No eat in place, just park, go in order, take with. 4951
