I unfortunately had to deal with Kevin who is the owner of Kingwood Air and he was rude and non-caring.  I did a "A/C" check up with them about 45 days earlier of my A/C failing.  Kingwood Air Conditioning won't deal with home warranty companies, so I had to wait for other company to come out and fix the issue. My company told me it was a compositor which should have been flagged as a concerning during this "check up" that Kingwood Air did for me. This item was obviously in need to be replaced or at least mentioned to the home owner for replacement.  I call Kevin to ask why his repair person did not say something to head off a possible failure, especially with 100 degree Texas weather, and he bluntly told me that all he is interested in getting people to sign up for his yearly maintenance "check up" plans and didn't just want a one time charge item.  He then told me to go somewhere else next time and that he would refund my outstanding balance from the maintenance program.  He is a greedy person, doesn't care about customer services and I will NEVER use them again!!  In fact tell all your friends to stay away from this company and especially Kevin.  it's too bad because his employees are so nice and they don't deserve to have a person like him undermining their hard work.  This was suppose to be a 150.00 a year program, 75 for A/C and 75 for heating, he sent me  a check for 60.05 so apparently he needs that extra 15.00 more than I do.  This just emphasizes the lack of caring and greed this person embodies.  4951

I'm thinking it was a Capacitor that failed instead of a compositor you mentioned. Not unusual for these to go out from time to time especially in a hot summer here in our region. I seem to have to replace these every few years and we have a fairly high end Trane unit, they just wear out over time. I've used a few of the companies that routinely work in the KW area and seem to have been the happiest with Kingwood Air Solutions. I found Goode overpriced for parts and service and KW Air wasn't much better. I personally don't see a big advantage with an annual plan. I can easily hose down the coil outside once a year which is about all they do. Unless a unit is old it probably won't loose coolant. Electrical components do fail over time and some inspection plans give a break on parts and labor. Probably the biggest thing you pay for in those plans is that they will put you at the top of the list for getting a service person out to your home. They also say they will change your AC filter but they usually only use the cheap ones and I use the more expensive HEPA filters so there is no point in this for me. 4951

We have had nothing but good experiences with Kingwood Air.  We currently use Deerwood AC, but Kingwood Air has always been good to us.  Yes, they want you to sign up for the plan, but I just tell them "no thank you" and they move on about their business. 4951

When I owned my house our capacitor went out.
that drip on the outside by your outside unit is the telltale sign. Mine dripped and my linen closet was damp. I bought those moisture crystals and went through a bag a week. I called Kingwood Air Solutions on a Sunday. He was there in an hour and had it fixed. Never had another problem. He charged regular rate for a Sunday emergency.

Now I just call the landlady. I've purchased a new unit for my Arizona house. Only one I'll be buying. 4951

Just a note: I hope nobody gets Kingwood Air and Kingwood Air Solutions mixed up. Kingwood Air Solutions is great and I would not recommend Kingwood Air to anyone. 4951

@beadweaver: Well I'm not a certified HVAC repairman but normally the capacitor is outside in the main unit with the fan and compressor. The capacitor kick starts the compressor or blower  mower with an extra jolt of electricity. The leak from the drain pipe exiting the house is a sign that the primary drain for the evaporative coil in the furnace/blower in your attic is clogged and the overflow pan is taking on water. It isn't uncommon for it to overflow and drip down onto the drywall of a ceiling if the pan is not level. Many units use a float switch that will cut off if the water level get too high, sort of like a toilet float valve does in the tank.

@Chrisinkingwood: Correct - capacitor provides boost to start the compressor which is the most expensive and energy-hogging part of an AC system.  There is nothing you can do to prevent capacitor failure.  When they die, they die, and then your compressor won't start, and it gets really hot in your house.Have had two experiences with Deerwood in the past, both positive.  Have not dealt with Kingwood AC.

@buffaloglenn: Yes and unless you have a good electric meter that measures microfarads and you feel confident you won't shock yourself I'd hire a repairman. My big Trane unit has a 2 stage compressor so with that and the condenser fan outside there are 3 different capacitors.  One thing I started doing is using a permanent marker like a Sharpie and writing on the inside of the panel they remove on the compressor unit the parts and date of what was replaced and who did the work, it helps if it might be a warranty repair.

@Chrisinkingwood:
Yes and he blew the line out. Checking on it as we had no air he changed the capacitor too. He told me the drip was the tell. Thing backing up not doing what it's supposed too. We had air in half an hour.

I once had some squirrels get up in the attic and didn't find out until the next summer when they were long gone that the little buggers chewed a hole in the overflow drain line from the catch pan. When our ac put some water in it I had it come through the dining room ceiling on the first floor! 4951

@SPJay: If it is the capacitor, those things typically work until they don't, not sure they can be "flagged".

@ET: And I would be really leery of what I was told by anybody the home warranty folks sent out.  I have not had good experiences with them in the past, why we dropped out coverage after the first year.  They send out crappy repair people and the parts they install are crap.
