Houston school turn away children because they are over crowded. Hmmm seem to remember a certain mayor telling us she was forcing some illegals here on us. Coincidence?

Maybe they shouldn't build multi- billion dollar football stadiums. I think that's crazy.

They blow off art and music for sports.

FYI your kid isn't that great and not everyone goes pro.
The money waste is insane.

Not disagreeing with what others have posted but there are some underlying issues that I read about earlier this summer. Texas law stipulates a cap of 22 students per classroom/teacher. Their is a waiver request process and in the past HISD has used this process, some would say more than average. This year the TEA sent HISD a letter stating that they would be strictly enforcing the 22 student/teacher ratio. Superintendent Grier has pushed several times for the Board to address the issue of overcrowding and expand campuses where possible but the Board ruled that out, maybe they didn't feel the timing was right to ask for bonds or additional funding. Many parents who moved to neighborhoods that had well known high achieving local HISD schools found out this summer they were on a waiting list until the schools had an accurate head count on or after the first day of school. Many times people don't let the school know they have moved or are not coming back. I don't doubt there are some schools in less desirable neighborhoods with class availability shortages but from what I read many of the schools with a waiting list or turning away kids are the ones that parents moved closer to just to get their  kids in there. 4951

Looks like more taxes on the way.

@Stealth83: Maybe if they could collect taxes from the illegals that we are being forced to educate...Oh wait....

@Chrisinkingwood:  From what I read and heard, these parents, on the waiting list you mention, didn't wait to hear if they were in or not, and just showed up, assuming they would get in.  They were turned away simply because of class size. It was for no other reason, yet people always want to make it something that it isn't.

I saw a mom last night said her son suppose to be in 8 grade but when he got to school they put him back to the 7 th because they gave him the wrong STARR test. The mom was upset. I'd be beyond upset. I didn't know kids could fail from STARR test. I thought you couldn't graduate without passing math, English part. 4951

Imo, our schools will never get better NO matter how much money we throw at them. We have taken the parents and teachers out of running our schools and handed it over to government. Government obviously has always had a part but we have let go of all of it and anytime government has total control of something it goes to the ****.

Our schools are ran like a business. Your kids are numbers and stats.

Now before anyone gets all huffy, we live in one of the best damn districts around...count your blessings. I have not met a teacher or admin staff in our area yet that I dislike. Even though I homeschool I love that our area schools are as good as they are.

Schools that are failing are not failing due to lack of money. They are failing due to the theft of money never reaching them and they are failing because the Government has taken total control.

My 2 cents...agree or not its still my 2 cents.. LOL 4951

@Katiemcg: I was thinking the same thing. My dd was in a class with 24 other kids in it.

@sweetie: If a child fails the STAAR test, they are supposed to take summer school and have the possibility to be held back a year.

@sweetie: After much uproar, they're giving the kids the chance to retake the test this morning, with results to be determined by Friday. What a mess.
