After 2 days of observing what and how much first and second graders are eating for lunch, I've come up with some advice/tips for the moms and dads out there:1.  Unless your child asks for a sandwich, don't pack a sandwich.  I could feed a small country with the amount of sandwiches these kids are tossing out each day.  I can pretty much guarantee that even if they eat the sandwich, they are scarfing down the cheetoes and drinking their kool aid first, leaving little room for the main dish.2.  Just because your child came home with an empty lunch sack doesn't mean they ate all of their food.  I've seen whole cheese sicks get tossed in favor of buying ice cream for dessert.3.  Please pack WATER for the drink.  We go outside in the heat for recess and sometimes gym class.  Children dehydrate faster than adults.  Even the beginning stages of dehydration produce symptoms of fatigue, thirst, headache, and difficulty concentrating.4.  I don't think lunch has to be boring for your kids, or look like it came from whole foods, but it should be balanced.  in addition to the main dish (sandwich, lunchables, leftovers, whatever) include fresh fruit and maybe a yogurt, cheese stick or another relatively healthy side.  They don't need dessert.  I promise you that 90% of them are eating dessert first or instead of other foods.  Refined sugar at lunch causes a crash in the afternoon.  BELIEVE ME, the students don't pay attention as well in the afternoon if they start to feel sluggish.These are observations from someone who is in the lunchroom for the whole lunchtime, and are meant to help out all the mommies and daddies out there I thought about doing this today because of all the food (and your money) being thrown in the trash.  Good luck! 4951

I miss the days of finding a handwritten note from my mom in my lunchbox. I should ask her for a few to put in my lunch now that I appreciate them. 4951

@Annie:

I don't miss getting my *** beat, for putting bugs in my empty lunch box for mom to find the next morning.

Edit. I know it has nothing to do with school lunches. I just remembered it when you stated it. Emoticon Oh the memories. 4951

@Annie: I plan on doing this at least once a week for mine.  My sister wrote them for me growing up.

My DD is in 5th.  She takes a gogurt, fruit snack, mandarine oranges or an apple, water, pb&j, a sugar free chocolate pudding and sometimes apple sauce or nutragrain bar.  I know it's a lot but she is not  big breakfast eater so she eats snacks during the day and brings some home and has one of them for the afternoon snacks.I used to send lunchables until I went on a field trip with her last year and saw her throw out almost the whole thing but the pepperoni, some cheese and the piece of candy. That is some awesome advise @topcat.     4951

I wonder what the observation would be if you evaluated how my husband ate his lunch a few years ago.

Now, he works from home so I don't plan anything for him. I always wondered if he and coworkers would swap! 4951

Also, I'm wondering how much goofing around & talking must go on at lunch, leaving little time to eat.... So the time they do have, ofcourse they go for the junk. I packed only a little bit of everything for my kindergartner.... A small apple juice, a small sandwich wrap, a few carrots w/ hummus, a small bag of cheez-its & a small "goodie"...for ex: a fig bar, or a cookie. Pinterest has great ideas (and sometimes makes me feel inadequate, ofcourse)!
She talks alot & eats slow at home, so I do wonder.... So far, she tells me she loves her lunch. I wonder if I can keep this going. 4951

I used to do the bag lunches for my 5 kids back when they were in school in Houston and sent pretty healthy stuff like @topcat suggests. Sadly my grandkids here in Atascocita get the school made lunch as the parents are out the door for work at 5:30 am. The kids tell me that sometimes they only get a few minutes to actually sit and eat because the lines for the purchased lunch are so long and they only get so many minutes for the lunch break whereas their friends who bring a bag lunch get more time. They also tell me how nasty the school made lunch usually is. 4951
