I've heard good things about the care.com site.  I'd be very careful about just hiring off a message board. 4951

I tried care.com.Most sitters/nannies are asking $10/hr or more. You also have to pay for the membership. Just a heads up 4951

Everyone on here jokes about everything on every thread. Please don't take it personally. You will probably get more help and advice if you are easy going and play along.

That's my recommendation. 4951

@jasm1987: after school? Have you looked into after school programs like YMCA or are you looking for night care because you work nights?

Primrose and Kids R Kids have great after school programs.  If you want a bit cheaper, then most elementary and middle schools have the YMCA program on campus until about 5:30 or 6:00. 4951

I think 10 an hour is cheap, is it not?

I tried helping a neighbor back in 98. I charged her $25 a week for two kids. One I put on the kindergarten bus till noon, fed them lunch and snack.
We read, did crafts and played.

When I took her to the assistance office they asked her who was her childcare, then asked to speak to me. She asked if I was nuts? Childcare was paying $175 a week per child.
I asked how a single mom making $6 an hour for 30 hours were to pay that and get ahead.

I can only imagine what it is now.
Good luck to you. Do double background checks. 4951

@beadweaver:
10.00 an hour is the going rate for one child these days for a private babysitter.

I think rate depends on situation...if you want someone for date night once in a while it would be 15 an hour...if your looking for someone all day while working then maybe 10 ....private at your house including cleaning and playing taxi, maybe more..at the comfort of the sitters home where she can care for more than one, maybe cheaper. Special needs, nights, days, one on one, how many hours????....price really matters on what the mother or father are expecting. 4951

@Burnsway:

I agree. Date night or just a couple hours...roughly 12 to 15 an hour. On a regular set schedule, a set price per week. 4951
