This video involves some math and some cursing, but he points out that ethanol is cheaper than gasoline and produces less energy, so you have to buy more "gasoline/ethanol" to go the same distance as with just gasoline.  No, they don't reduce the price when they add the cheaper ethanol.

Ethanol isn't an oil industry idea, it was mostly mandated by your friends at the EPA when they figured out MTBE as an oxygenate was killing us.
Costs a fortune in distribution and blending infrastructure. Mostly delivered to the local distribution sites by rail and truck, then blended truck by truck for delivery to your station. Does not pipeline particularly well. 4951

I HATE ethanol. It screwed with the carburetor on my Model A Ford because that carb wasn't designed to deal with ethanol. It also screws with lawnmowers, generators, etc if you don't drain your gas tanks periodically. 4951

@ET:  Absolutely.  Ethanol absorbs water/moisture even from the air.  I worked at a Ethylene plant that also produced propylene and ethylene.  The propylene and ethylene side of the plant got extremely cold.  Any time we had to open any equipment/pipe, we had to flush the lines with ethanol to absorb any water/moisture that may have gotten inside, because we we put the equipment back in service, any water would freeze. Not only is ethanol a water magnet, but many of the gaskets/o-rings/seals that older engines have were selected just for gasoline.  Adding ethanol to the gasoline has caused some major problems for older engines.

Back during the winter of 1980 I remember them introducing ethonol into the gas during the winter. Suppose to save fuel, that kind of thing.A lot of cars/trucks had issues. The two biggest then was fuel line filters clogging up (the ethanol "cleaned" out the varnish and sludge in your fuel system) and certain seals deteriorating because the ethanol ate them away.I had the clogged fuel filter problem, and there is nothing more fun than changing a fuel filter in -10 weather (I was in the military, could not afford to have it done). 4951

Anyway, due to the inefficiencies of the product and the delivery, I doubt we accomplished anything towards cleaning the air.....which was the goal.  If anything we probably made it worse and at some point they'll determine ethanol is killing us also.  4951

And there is this...The approximately $1 billion a year in current federal and state subsidies (mainly to large corporations) for ethanol production are not the only costs to consumers, the Cornell scientist observes. Subsidized corn results in higher prices for meat, milk and eggs because about 70 percent of corn grain is fed to livestock and poultry in the United States Increasing ethanol production would further inflate corn prices, Pimentel says, noting: "In addition to paying tax dollars for ethanol subsidies, consumers would be paying significantly higher food prices in the marketplace." 4951

@ET:  You're probably right on both counts.  If we need to burn 4% more "gasoline/ethanol" to go the same distance, are we really reducing air pollution? We used to use lead (tetraethyllead) in gasoline, but we found out that what bad.  Chemists came up with MTBE so we replaced the lead with MTBE.  Now, they found MTBE is bad, so it's an on-going game to find something. 4951

@ET:  When we visit relatives in NE LA, it's a heavy farming area.  We used to see a real mixture of crops.  Now, it seems most land is dedicated to soybeans and dent corn.  Someone even built an ethanol plant up there.  It takes a lot of corn to make the ethanol, so I guess they found it was better to build a plant close to the crops and then ship the final product farther.

@Retired_Engineer: Some say it takes more than a gallon of fuel to produce a gallon of ethanol.  When you add in carting around either the feedstock or the finished product, they probably aren't far off.

@BooBear:  It's not much of a battle.  We ALL dislike/hate ethanol in gasoline.

@Retired_Engineer: Maybe we could try politicians in gasoline? heh heh...Seriously though. I want ethanol free gasoline so I can turn the boost up more.

@MTechnique:   Where do you find ethanol-free gasoline around here?Edit:  I misread your comment and thought you'd found a source.
