Y'all remember there was an open house or something like that for a new development for retired folks? Up by the freeway between KW and NP? Was it apartments or homes? Did anyone go see them?I've been thinking of where I'd like to live.  I think I want a 2 bedroom home that has lots of storage, small yard.  I want more patio area, less kitchen/dining.  Ideas? 4951

@lola:  You're much too young to even be thinking about that now. 4951

@Retired_Engineer: At what age is one considered a senior? I AM going to get a senior discount whenever I can!  I WANT to be retired!I don't want to be moving when I'm in my 60's. I think I should do it sooner rather than later.

@lola:   A senior is always 2 years older than you are.  I turn 60 next month, so seniors are 62+!My wife joined AARP because they had some giveaway someplace she went so I also became a member.  I was a little insulted the first time a clerk asked if I was a senior or AARP member, but then I realized that I AM  getting older AND I appreciated the discounts!I wouldn't want to move in my 60's either, so I certainly understand that.  I just don't think you are anywhere near 60s!  Emoticon

@lola:  I certainly can't blame you for planning ahead.  My parents started out with a 20ft X 20ft house my father and his brother built.  After they had my older sister, they added on about another 400 sq ft.  Then when I was about age 5, they added on about another 400 sq ft.  They raised four kids in that house with no A/C.  My mother always wanted a brick house, carpeting, and central Air and heat.  So about the same time we moved here (1993), they built a new house right behind the old house (the old house was in poor shape).  Once they finished it, they moved everything into the new house and had the old house torn down, leaving the foundation as a parking area.I've mentioned this before, but my Dad put a lot of thought into the design of the house for when they got older.  Wide hallways, wide doors, a handicap shower, one sink low and nothing underneath it, etc.  Both of my parents ended up needing to use those electric scooters.  My mother passed away in 2007 and my Dad passed away in 2013 at 89 years old, twenty years after he had that house built. 4951

The ones we are looking at are 55.

@Stealth83:

Are those stand alone homes or apartments?

@sweetie
Yes, patio homes. Nothing with stairs for me.

I will be 55 in January! I started get AARP stuff in the mail right after my 50th birthday.

@retired-engineer
I'm not too far behind you!

My parents have lived in a few over 55 communities, for the most part they've been pretty happy.  The key for them was single residence or only one attached wall, preferably a garage with their own private outdoor space, single level, but they aren't responsible for exterior maintenance or grounds.They bought one condo in a retirement community, renovated it, it was beautiful.  But it was a high rise and it made my mom crazy.  Too much noise and the smokers in the building, so they flipped it. My mom worked with the elderly for years and has done an excellent job of ageing gracefully and understanding limitations.  4951

Stand alone 2 and 3 bedroom homes on the golf course in Pearland.

@Stealth83:

A friend of mine bought a home in a golf community for seniors in Richmond. They offer lots of activities and amenities, not just golf. 4951
