I feel sure that Montgomery County is much more interested in letting the public see their offenders paying their debt to society than other counties in this area are. I saw these inmates out today at Loop 494 and Ford Road picking up trash and clearing bandit signs from the intersection. Those guys never took their eyes off of their work... I'm sure they are told not to interact with anyone waiting at the red lights. When I was little, we would see the inmates out on the roads like this, except that they were literally chained together at the ankles then. Do you ever see inmates out this way in other counties?

Chain gangs should be utilized all over. Think of the savings cities and towns would have...maybe it could even lower the taxes...heck we have to pay for them to be in prison, they need to earn their keep. 4951

I've seen that in various areas.  It's good to see the prisoners doing something beneficial and I suspect they enjoy seeing something different. 4951

Well it's really not a chain gang. It's low risk, non violent offenders who are coming near the end of their sentence & they were good boys while incarcerated.  Usually nothing to be afraid of.  If you talk to most of them they like getting out & doing this sort of stuff.  It breaks up the day.  Well I'm not too sure in 100 degrees weather  though........... 4951

@thegoodwife: Exactly. Thus the punctuation marks around the word "chain" in the title.  Emoticon  Definitely an old-time term for inmates out working.

In Arizona they do and are chained in stripes on the side of the road. They also bury the indigent. Male and female don't matter. One girl buried her own father. Then they go back to their hot army tents surrounded by wire.

Change of scenery. Lol 4951

When I lived in Europe the inmates did all of the upkeep of the forests along the highway and the forest were beautiful and immaculate. Once during an ice storm I was driving through the mountain areas of Oklahoma and inmates were clearing the branches and downed trees to allow traffic to go over the pass. It is certainly a better use of their time and energy than sitting around watching TV or a lot of other things.  Maybe they could teach them to fill pot holes. Then they would have job security when they got out..there always seems to be a lot of those around that need filling! 4951

The inmates spent this entire day cleaning the ditches and edges of Ford Road. If you use Ford Road, note the difference... it looks much better!  4951

@DVaz: That's sort of what I was just thinking. The county/city/whatever that's in charge of the common areas by Hamblen, Sorters, and 494 is slacking!
