My sweet little Moxie tested positive for heartworm today. I'm quite sad. She's the little stray we found just a little over a year ago. Right now, she's less than 2 years old, so at some point she became infected. I'm so glad I thought to have her tested but now we need to brace ourselves for the treatment.The vet explained the FDA approved route, complete with injections and crate rest. He said it heartworms would clear up in 4-5 months. The other option is to put her on Advantage Multi and then keep her on that pretty much indefinitely. Going that route would take a year or so for a clear diagnosis.Any suggestions or prior experience with this? I think it was @Ray who said his dog had tested clear for heartworm after going through treatment. 4951

We had two rescues with HW.  Went the injection route, coordinated by the rescue organization at a vet in Spring,.  This worked just fine - 6 years later both still kicking. 4951

I just had my rescue test positive.  It was not all that bad.  3 days at the vet and I did not crate her.  Just picked up all the toys and took her on controlled walks for the first 10 days and then no more than a block for the next three weeks.  She was clear after a month.  Best thing I can tell you is check all vets for costs.  I had one vet tell me $1800.00. I ended up paying $580.00 4951

@tatertot58: Which vet was that? I was given a ballpark figure of $1000. Injections, I believe, and several weeks crate rest.

@HollyHobby:
My Sneakers was a positive rescue too. We have her on Sentinal spectrum and she has no new microfilia. That means whatever worms she had are going to die off in time. Vet uses doxycycline to help speed up the process. No crate reat required and she's as active as can be.

@HollyHobby: I use Dr. McCann in Summerwood. It is worth the 10 mile drive from my house in KW, plus Becca likes to ride in the truck.

Agree with the slow kill with doxycycline!  Our rescue was positive and had been for who knows how long.  Did the ivermectin with doxy and she cleared.  Took over a year but no side effects and she is a happy healthy middle aged lady! (She was around 5 when we found her.) 4951

 We rescue.  Personally I have successfully treated 2 Heartworm positive dogs with Doxycycline and Heartgard. Now putting another 2 through with Doxycycline and Advantage Multi which is now thought to be better. The first 2 tested negative within 8 months.  Doxycycline kills a parasite that lives on the heartworms which in turn is thought to weaken them. I have done the harsh treatment in the past but will never take that route again.  4951

I personally wouldn't do the slow kill. Dr McCann explained to me that it could possibly never get rid of all of them. I went the fast kill route and after 5 weeks he tested all clear. It cost me around $700. Price goes by weight and Nash weighed about 54 pounds at the time. He showed no I'll effects. It was like he never went through the treatment. He is also about 2 or 2 1/2 years old. 4951

The great Pyr I adopted went with the slow kill and he was clear at about 4 months. I waited forever  to adopt him b/c of the heartworm.  Unfortunately we only had him for two days b/c he bit my husband. 4951

lil bastard had A LOT of worms. We tried the fast kill, and worms started dying faster than his body could dispose of them. It was suppose to be two injections over a few days, but the first one almost killed him so we went the slow method and after about a year he was heartworm free.

I would consider the weight and age of the dog before making any decisions

lil b is 15lbs and was around 2 years old

@mm4731: Is that really the dogs name or do you just call it that?  Just curious.
