Hello everyone!A while ago I posted something on this website titled "Can anyone tell me about Black Cat Ridge?" where I asked anyone with info on Black Cat Ridge to get in touch with me, as I was writing a paper for a competition about it. Link to original post here : https://www.kingwood.com/message_board/view_message.php?message_board_parent_id=1198818&message_board_message_id=1198818I just thought that I might update everyone on what became of that, as a lot of you did indeed tell me some interesting things. I did not actually write my paper over Black Cat Ridge. I could not find enough documentation to pull together a paper, so I had to drop it. Instead, I focused on Bordersville. If you do not know about Bordersville, that's alright, but you better learn. As my English teacher put it, one of the few people who actually knew about Bordersville before I told them about it, Bordersville is this area's "best kept secret". They're a poor little area across the railroad tracks from Humble, primarily African American, with this insane history. This is disputed, and there would not be evidence to back this up due to the very nature of the event, but sometime after the Humble oil boom, Bordersville residents say that the white people of Humble ran all of the black people out of town, forcing them to move to the area where Bordersville is now. That has cemented them into a fate that lingers to this day - one of being dirt poor, and persistently being pushed back when they would try to pull themselves up, due to racism and bureaucratic neglect. It is a fantastic and incredible story. And it won me that competition. I would put what I wrote up on here, but as it has not yet been published and is now owned by the Dallas Morning News, I am pretty sure it's against the rules. But I HIGHLY encourage you all to look into Bordersville and learn about it for yourselves. It is a story that really should not be ignored, as it has been for such a long time.Anyway, enough of that. I do plan to do something with Black Cat Ridge still. I will be writing for my school's newspaper next year, and I am going to see if I can pull together a story on the Ridge for that. That I will certainly be able to link to on here. I am sorry for not putting this update up for a long time, but hopefully this will do some to amend that. You all enjoy the rest of your summer! And thank you all again for your kindness.Emily 4951

@EmilyRH: I'm sure it is disputed, and I have to respectfully disagree. Every individual in the U.S. is provided a free K-12 education that is the basis and foundation for the future...to work hard, earn good grades, apply for college (plenty of financial aid available to everyone), earn a degree. From that point, with an education and degree, the world is their oyster. That degree will allow them to become gainfully employed. Gainfully employed will allow them to earn a good living to live anywhere they please.

No one is stuck and forced anywhere. The American Dream will NOT be handed out in exchange for doing nothing and standing in line with your hand out. Unless you are born into money, you have to get up, apply yourself and work for it, but ANYONE can do it, regardless of skin color, background, residence, beliefs or lack thereof.

Congrats on YOUR hard work and your paper being published. We might disagree on this point, but I wish you the best of luck in your future endeavors and I hope you discover a love for writing and hope to see more works published.

@donnatella:  Yeah, "cemented them into a fate..." sounds like these human beings, born with an intellect and a free will, have no other choice than to resign themselves to never rising above their circumstances.

@HollyHobby: Those that blindly depend on the government to think for them, feed, house and support them, yes, they might feel herded into a corner and cemented into a fate. You have to get up, stand up and support yourself, making your own way out of a situation that makes you feel oppressed and unhappy.

"@EmilyRH....So, dude, does the white people today make the black people of Bordersville keep their neighborhood unsafe from NOT white people, but back on black crime..  Does the white people today make the Bordersville residents keep their community trashy and filthy? Is it the white people's fault today that Bordersville inhabitants sell crack to their very own neighbors, have unprotected sex resulting in multiple babies at the age of a baby themselves, drop out of school, steal, rob and join gangs? Is it the white people's fault today that these residents have no obvious sense of Self Responsibility, Self Pride, Motivation, Ambition, Self Accountability or Moral Compass?  Is it the white people's fault today that these Bordersville folk choose to sit on their lazy **** and collect their Government Assistance and Welfare instead of getting a job like the rest of us and making their own luck in life? What a load of Race-Baiting Propaganda Bull****....  It's racist rhetoric like above mentioned that does more harm than any type of good...   How about dropping the "White" and "Black," and all of us just being Human Beings acting as responsible Human Beings....       Accountable for our own actions in life... The perpetual continued "Victim Mentality" has got to stop.... 4951

I would love to read her paper and I will read more about Black Cat Ridge.  Local history is interesting and I can't wait until they open up the Cemetary in Humble right before Hwy 59/69.  I have been dying to walk thru there now that they have cleared it and you can see it from the road. 4951

@donnatellaHi! I don't wish to start a fight, that is not the purpose of this. I just thought I might clarify a few things... you are entitled to your beliefs, and I am not arguing against them, I just thought to point a couple facts out, because they kind of go against what you said... Up until the 1960's, black people did not have the rights that white people had. There is a scene in my paper where the main character of the story, a man who very graciously let me interview him about his life growing up in Bordersville, tries to get a job but is asked to leave immediately, because the employed had not known he was black before he came to the actual business, as he had applied over the phone. He then had to watch a white man walk in and get the job right away, right in front of his face. This was around the 1950's. You will see it differently, I'm sure but that is fine. But I think that if for years and years your parents, your grandparents, and your great grandparents are unable to get but the lowest paying jobs, that doesn't have a great effect on a child's outlook. There are certainly outliers - the man I mentioned did tell me about some of his friends who moved out of Bordersville and to different states so that they could get away from the poverty and find a new life. And interview man himself ran a successful BBQ place for many years. So, you are right, there were certainly people able to still achieve a good life, despite the conditions that were around them. These people are a minority of the Bordersville population though. Most of them were not able to to that, for one reason or another. So, I see your point, In this day in America, your point may stand. But for years, Bordersville was not able to do this, because they for sure did not have the right that would allow them to achieve what you describe in your post.Sorry if this made you angry. I really don't want to fight, I just want to inform, I'm sure you're a nice person. I just saw that you did not know all of the facts, and I always want to make sure that people know what they are speaking about, because I've made an *** of myself too many times with not knowing all the information before I declared something. Really sorry, I hope you have a nice day!Emily 4951

@herron1345Hi, again, like I said with Donnatella, I don't want to fight. But I say this with all the respect I can, as I know you have made it in life and are older than me, but you are being a bit racist, and are being a bit ignorant. Now, I still don't want to fight, though that sounds provocative, but it's true... It's just that a lot of what you say is not substantiated. I really do wish I could put what I wrote on here. A lot of people in Bordersville are very old. As I said in my reply to Donnatella as well (you may want to read that), those older people grew up in a time where poor black people could not achieve a lot of things that a poor white person could. You say that I shouldn't bring race into it, but the fact is, I have to - for a long time, black people specifically did not have the freedoms that would make it possible for more of them to help themselves out of poverty. I am not going to address a lot of the other things you wrote, other than by saying you're being kinda rude. I am really sorry, I don't want to upset you at all, though this is bound to. Those are not nice things to say, and they are flatly not true. I am a white person, and some of what you said makes me want to go to Bordersville and apologize profusely, and say not all white people are like you. I am trying not to be mean to you, though I have probably failed. I don't mean this meanly towards you, and I don't blame you at all for what you said, but some of that really makes me so ashamed to be white. You say in your post that I should drop white and black, and just focus on them being human beings... You may have forgotten this though. No matter what color someone is, they are a human being. You should not say things like that about other human being. Not ever again.I am really, really sorry. I shouldn't have replied to you, you honestly made me very mad and ashamed of my race. I was doing my best to say what I needed to say, but not be rude in return, though I think what I really felt overcame that a little, and I am EXTREMELY sorry. I  just really wish that you would not say those things about other people that you do not know. I hope you have a nice day and a nice summer, I really do wish you the best. No hard feelings.Emily 4951

"but you are being a bit racist, and are being a bit ignorant"@EmilyRHSo, dude, because I made valid points that do not fit in with your personal beliefs, opinions or agenda, you result to name calling....  I said the whole truth, and I will NOT / do NOT apologize for not caving in to the political correctness bull**** that has ran rampant and divided this country...   I personally stand on Principle, Honesty, Character, Self Responsibility, Self Respect, Self Accountability, and a good, solid Moral Compass.....   And on this Forum, young lady, we all respect each other's honest opinions and feedback, even if we disagree, that's how an intelligent being grows as an individual....  And since my honesty made you so ashamed to be a white person, why don't you go and try living in Bordersville, and see how you like it....  I've personally scored a many a sack of weed there back in my younger days, and don't think you'd dig it that much once the sun goes down....  Oh, and since you're such a righteous activist for the black people of Bordersville, what exactly have you done to help better than community?  Oh, and just another thought, since you wanna chant "Black Lives Matter," you might want to take a further look into the Black On Black Crime Statistics, not just in Bordersville, but in the U.S. as a whole Nation, my friend...   ....And if you really want a taste of an oppressed people, try looking at the continued persecution of our Jewish brothers and sisters....   4951

@Donnatella @Herron1345 @HollyHobby I'm with y'all on this. I'm so sick of the past being an excuse for the present. I actually saw a black man in his 30's on the corner by a stop light in Seattle last week with a sign tellimg wgite people ti give him a dollar as "retribution " -- NO LIE! That man did *not* live hundreds of years ago or in the 60's. SMH. 4951

Wow.

Just saw this. I re read her post, for a writer she should proof read before hitting send.

@herron1345 @donnatella sorry my friends. She sure is clueless.
I started out reading her post ( i love history. Yes graveyards too) but had to share it with dh. We kinda pegged her for a younger that might of had a night light go off. Lol
I asked dh, omg did she just call them old white ignorant ****? He replied, I think she did. Lol

She may have interviewed one old man and based her story on his story. As you point out we all have stories. Why didn't he follow his friends.

She's ashamed to be a white woman?
Is that the new thing? Cause I'm an old white ignorant *** too. She did point out how she didn't want any of us to be ignorant to the facts.

Here's a few more things I'm sick of.....
political correctness
white shaming
being called a racist
special interest groups.
Blah blah blah.

To the original poster Emily?
Grow up and get all the facts before calling people names. That's juvenile and so unprofessional.
A writer a journalist is not supposed to shove their agenda down the people's throat.
You had me interested and blew it.
