2 Florida teen boys are still missing after a fishing trip. Boys left on Friday, their boat was found capsized but no signs of the boys. I'm the mom of 3 dds, but I'm wondering if anyone with boys would allow them to go out on a weekend trip alone. The parents say they are perfectly capable of being out alone on the water. 4951

I thought the same thing. The moms keep saying the boys have been on the water all their lives. Well at 14 they really don't have long lives at all. I saw a picture this morning if one of them on a bike. It dawned on me that they were too young to even drive. So sad. 4951

Fourteen seems so young to allow them to take the boat out themselves in the ocean.  I'd be worried about someone that age operating a boat by themselves on a lake. It's heartbreaking though. 4951

Praying that the boys are found alive today. I read that some people are calling for negligent charges to be brought against them but I think they have been punished enough. 4951

It's a horrible situation over all. It was negligence on the parents' part for allowing them to go off on their own like that. And saying that they're very skilled in the water isn't an excuse, they're only 14.. good lawd they're not even old enough for a driving permit or to get a real job! As a parent, I can't imagine the worry and stress they're going thru, but that's their own punishment they put on themselves for assuming and allowing this in the first place. I feel sorry for these boys who don't have parents to properly watch over them. I really hope the boys are found soon safe and sound!   4951

I think we are all going to find out there is more to this story than meets the eye.  Something seems adrift.  No pun intended. 4951

It's very sad. At times I feel overprotective, and my DS will definitely agree, but when I hear about things like this, I feel just fine and comfy being overprotective. Also, I think, way deep down, he appreciates it too. Some of the parents of his friends let their kids just run wild. Times are different and we have to do our jobs as parents to make sure they are safe and become responsible and well adjusted adults. 4951

My kids have grown up around boats and water, and my daughter has her boating license, but no way would I even think of allowing her to take the boat out by herself or with friends on the lake, much less an ocean. We've been out many times and watched the weather change so fast that getting back to land is a bit challenging. It wouldn't take much to overturn a 19 ft fishing boat manned by a child. 4951

I'm not sure whether it's a good or bad thing, but times sure have changed.  I grew up in rural (Rhodes) Michigan and recall one time when I was about 12...so 1978ish...my younger brother and I hiked off into the Gladwin State Forest to do some squirrel hunting.  We had ridden our bikes a couple of miles to Grim Hill and walked in from there.  Being Native American boys raised hunting, we knew our way around a woods fairly well and did this quite often.At some point during the day I was stupid, headstrong, naive, irrational, and was sure that my compass was wrong so I tossed it.  A few hours later it was clear that we were lost.  We'd have been able to navigate back by the stars, but of course it was overcast and decided to snow on us.  I decided we'd walked enough and we spend the night in place.  Cut a few hemlock bows, made a make-shift shelter, and built a fire.  We woke up the next morning with a half an inch of snow on the ground and the sun rising in the east.  Made our way to Highway 61 as it's the only road that goes completely through the forest so we knew we could find it.  We were probably 10 miles from home so we hitch-hiked a ride close enough to walk the rest of the way.So 12 and 9 year old boys spent the night lost in the woods with the temps down to mid-30s and there were no police involved, no search parties.  My dad had driven around and seen our bikes.  He knew we were somewhere in the woods and trusted we'd find our way out.  When we showed up at the house around noon that next day he scuffed at us for getting lost, chastised me for not trusting my compass, and piled us in the truck to go get our bikes.  It was a non-event.Today they'd have the choppers up, the dogs out, and equusearch hot on our tails. 4951

No kidding. It all depends on how you were raised. I was gone in the creeks and swamps in Alabama when I was younger than this. It's a tragedy. What if a father was with them and they still cap sized?
If they were raised on the water as the obviously were it's very common for kids that age to take the boat out. 4951

@sweetie:

Yea that would be ridiculous. Our society is so crazy. There are kids that go fish for their family to survive all over the world. Accidents happen. It's just a sad tragedy. I say pray for the family's pain. 4951

My  fear is thta one of the boys got into trouble and the other tried to help.  So sad, I think that is the most likely scenario.  I sure pray I am wrong and they are both found alive and for the families sake I hope they are recovered if not. 4951
