We have our upstairs turned up slightly higher(1or2degrees) than downstairs because our Dr is out of town. Is it better to have a fan upstairs pointed down...down stairs pointed up...downstairs pointed to the living room...or none of the above? 4951

@RogueHippEE:
Although I am on one level I did that yesterday. I woke sicker than a dog. Eyes ears nose and chest.
I'm sure I'll be at the dr by Friday.

We have the ceiling fans downstairs going all the time. Upstairs, the only fan is in our dd's room. I was debating on an extra floor fan since it's so dang hot our a/c is always going.

On a big house like that. If you sleep downstairs you can keep cooler. 4951

The other side of the big house, two story house coin. And coinage adds up hot or cold.
In Arizona I took the $25,000 plunge and built a saltwater pool within 6 months of purchase.

Our new house is one story. I will never have a two story home again.

My kids have been out of town too so I  set the upstairs to 78 with fans going in every room. The downstairs has stayed nice and cool with no problem and I can feel a noticeable difference when I get to the top of the stairs. I don't think the a/c downstairs is working any harder since the heat rises. 4951

Do invest in good blinds and insulated panels. Keeps those between your drapes and your sheers.
They are well worth the money.

I also used a heavy tinting vinyl. I only had enough for two so I did the biggest ones I could on the hottest side of the house. 4951

Running ceiling fans while nobody is in a room is about useless. They work by moving air over you and cooling your body only, mostly by evaporation of sweat. So basically you are running up a bigger electric bill.

Also by turning your upper AC cooler than downstairs the cool air does fall. What I found though is the cooler air hits the lower thermostat shutting it off. This causes the outer rooms away from the thermostat to get warm. Best to let each unit handle it's own load. 4951

.  I do keep lights off during the day because it makes me think things are hotter with them onEmoticon.

@Fallon:

Standard incandescent bulbs throw a ton of heat in the room. Try to touch the thing when it has been on for a few minutes. That makes the AC units work harder. I started switching out all my bulbs to LED, they use less electricity, last way longer and don't throw heat.
We have a bunch of can lights in the kitchen, when on it was like having eight heat lamps baking you. The difference with the LEDs is amazing and you don't have to live in the dark. They are pricey but pay out quickly. 4951
