We are talking about doing this in the back yard with a little rock waterfall.  Anyone done this before and have any tips?  What type of plants around it work best for shade, but not too much litter in the water?  Did you dig it out by hand or use a machine?  How deep does it need to be for Koi to stay cool?  I have been researching for a little while on and off, but wondered if anyone had personal experience with it. 4951

@Nurse3: DH has built one before, several years ago, I think for his mom in Oregon. He probably couldn't give you much advice about plants, as the climate is so different there, but he may be able to help with depth and other info. I can't remember if I told you that I've been asking him to build one for us, mostly for my son's turtle who has outgrown her tank. He keeps saying our yard is too small, but I argue. Emoticon Pttthhh!  If I pressure him enough, he may be starting on it in the Fall. It's just too hot right now. Then you and I could share some ideas. 4951

I've had several small ponds. In Ohio I had one in the ground- it was a form- it's a pain in the rear to dig a huge hole- I was afraid to do a free form and use the liner stuff- because if you get a tear- all the water leaks out. The problem with digging a hole here is that the water table is so high. In my yard iif I dig 12 inches I have water. You may want to check around with companies that specialize in Koi ponds, but I suggest something that is at least 24-36 inches deep. Deep enough to keep them cool BUT also to keep raccoons AND egrets from an easy meal- I've lost fish to both!! I had 2 above ground here in Texas. One was a half whiskey barrel with a liner and a fountain. I had it in the shade of my porch- worked great but took up too much space. I eventually bought a kit- it was a 90 gallon one- I put it out on my deck and even though it was shaded by a palm - it was too hot for the fish and I developed an algae problem. I could never get the algae under control- despite products for algae and frequent water changes it suffocated the fish nod I finally gave up. I've seen the koi ponds in the garden tours- they are pretty complicated especially if you have no experience in keeping fish( the mechanics behind it- pumps, flow rates ect). Whatever you do- start out with common goldfish to cycle the pond. The koi are very very expensive. When you are ready for the koi- go to Fish R Us on 242 - they have some cool ones- bring your checkbook those things run in the 100's 4951

When I was in high school I talked my dad into a koi pond. The deal was I dig the hole, he'd buy the form. Well I dug about two scoops when I realized our yard was HARD clay & rocks. So the pond never happened, but the shovel stayed in the same spot until we moved. I think just to tease me. 4951

I currently have a pond.  Depends on how big of a pond you want.  Mine is about 4 X 10.  Just the right size and I dug it by hand.   My mom also has one,  Her fish have grown so much.  They even come tot he surface when fed so you could actually pet them if you want.I have a Waterfall form you can have if you want.  All if needs is the bricks and stones added.  I did no use the preform liner as they are too hard to keep in the ground and have to be a specific shape.  I used a rip proof lifetime guarantee liner I got at Home Depot.  You can cut to size and trim it up when you are satisfied with the size and fit. 4951

@tatertot58: Awesome girlie!!!  I would love to see it.  Do you have a picture by chance that you could message me?  We are just in the planning stages of trying to spruce up the back yard.  I have been debating for a while whether to hire someone or do it ourselves.  I think we will just do it ourselves so that we can do it in stages and keep the costs down.  I have been looking at the prefab type ponds and waterfalls, but just didn't know which one to go with.  You just never know these days with the various products if they will stand up or just fall apart after a few months.  We would just like a nice water feature in the backyard that can drowned out the noise from KWD.  The next phase will be planter boxes behind my garage.  We will take out all the grass back there and put in stepping stones and gravel.  My hubby can make the boxes easy enough, so that project just takes time and elbow grease.  We'll have a pea fence along that side of the fence and some small hanging planter boxes fixed to the back of the garage for my herbs. After all of that is done, I'd like to put in a nice hot tub to enjoy it all and relax all the muscles that are going to be sooooo tired once those two projects are done.  LOLOLOL
