Sorry I'm a little behind on this issue.  I have been out of touch for the last few weeks.  As I got caught up, I was thunderstruck by one of Donald Trump's comments. How stupid and narcissistic can Donald Trump be?!? Recently, he said about Sen. John McCain: “He’s not a war hero,” Trump said of McCain. “He’s a war hero because he was captured,” Trump said sarcastically. “I like people that weren’t captured.”What an incredibly STUPID thing to say.
My response to Trump is "DO YOU PREFER SOLDIERS WHO LIVED OR DIED IN
THAT WAR?" ALL of our soldiers, marines, sailors, pilots, etc. that
fought in Viet Nam are HEROES. Whether they lived, died, were captured,
or horribly disfigured, they are ALL still heroes.
Viet Nam was not a popular war. It was a stupid war started by
politicians. However, our men and women answered the call by this
nation's politicians and fought that war. Meanwhile, where was Donald Trump in 1968??? ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ It was the spring of 1968, and Donald Trump had it good.
He was 21 years old and handsome with a full head of hair. He avoided
the Vietnam War draft on his way to earning an Ivy League degree. He was
fond of fancy dinners, beautiful women and outrageous clubs. Most
important, he had a job in his father’s real estate company and a brain
bursting with money-making ideas that would make him a billionaire.
“When I graduated from college, I had a net worth of perhaps $200,000,”
he said in his 1987 autobiography “Trump: The Art of the Deal,” written
with Tony Schwartz. (That’s about $1.4 million in 2015 dollars.) “I had
my eye on Manhattan.” More than 8,000 miles away, John McCain
sat in a tiny, squalid North Vietnamese prison cell. The Navy pilot’s
body was broken from a plane crash, starvation, botched operations and
months of torture. As Trump was preparing to take Manhattan, McCain was trying to relearn how to walk.
The stark contrast in their fortunes was thrown into sharp relief
Saturday when Trump belittled McCain during a campaign speech in Iowa. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Donald Trump should kiss the boots of John McCain and every other
veteran... but he does not deserve that honor. 4951

@friday1:

Thanks for that link. I find this (and much more in the article) very troubling:

... the Pentagon had received more than 1,600 firsthand sightings of live American prisoners and nearly 14,000 secondhand reports. The intelligence officers who gathered these reports from refugees and other informants in the field described a large number of them as credible and so marked the reports. Some of the informants had been given lie-detector tests and passed.

But the Pentagons Defense Intelligence Agency, after reviewing all the reports, concluded that they do not constitute evidence that men were still alive at the time.

McCain and Kerry endorsed the Pentagons findings. They also treated both the Pentagon and the CIA more as the committees partners than as objects of its inquiry. As one committee staff investigator said, in a memo preserved from the period: Speaking for the other investigators, I can say we are sick and tired of this investigation being controlled by those we are supposedly investigating.

McCain stood out because he always showed up for the committee hearings where witnesses were going to talk about specific pieces of evidence. He would belittle and berate these witnesses, questioning their patriotism and otherwise scoffing at their credibility. All of this is on record in the National Archives.

I have zero respect for John McCain. He plays dirty politics against conservatives in the Republican party and has relied on his so-called "hero" status for about 3 decades too long. I couldn't care less about his Vietnam record. What I care about is how he has handled himself as a Senator. He talks a good talk when he wants to get elected (I lived in Arizona for 40+ years) but then, when his vote really matters on conservative issues, he votes with the Democrats. Every. Single. Time. 4951

I thank McCain for his service and respect him for surviving his capture. But he's become a typical DC politician , all talk and no walk. It's time for him to retire and get some energetic willing to speak up loudly and get this country moving with fresh ideas. After all these years i would have thought AZ would have dumped by now. I don't trust him anymore. He's become a dull washed up politician. I just about threw up when he got the nomination to run as pres. We gotta do better. 4951

@friday1:  Oh, I'm not a fan of McCain either, but at least he fought in Viet Nam.  Trump's statement was just so blatantly stupid and insulting to all veterans.

I did not agree with Trump. But I do think we over use the term hero.

Everyone isn't a hero. Not everyone vet saw action, the ones who did have my admiration and thanks. Those who stayed stateside or served during peace time come on, they did a job like everyone.

Everyone can't be a hero or if we are all hero's then it means average.

@Stealth83:  Agreed.  I don't necessarily consider McCain a hero, but at least he fought.

@sweetie:  I agree that he's talking about issues that need to be discussed, but he went way off the mark on this particular statement.  Trump will make for good attention about the issues, but I personally don't think he will even make it to the primary.
